PAL names preservation award winners

.
The Preservation Alliance of La Crosse is celebrating Preservation Month in May by recognizing outstanding preservation efforts. Awards will be presented on Wednesday, May 21, at the Freight House. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and a program at 7:15 p.m.

Winners include:

— Tye and Sandy Schwalbe, for the adaptive reuse of an historic property, the former Christian Science Church at 145 West Ave S. It was built in the Greek Revival Style of architecture about 1922. The Schwalbes purchased it in 2006 and have remodeled it into a family home.

— Tim Acklin, an advocate and friend of La Crosse area preservation who came to La Crosse in 2003 and has been employed by the Planning Department, working closely with the Preservation Commission and Neighborhood Planning and Historical Preservation Planning Departments.

— Stephen Cottrell and Katherine Pertzsch Cottrell, for the restoration of the former Dan McMillan home (pictured) at 1222 Cass St. The house was built in 1914 by Bentley and Merman. The couple purchased it in 2006 and immediately began an extensive period-appropriate restoration of the Prairie Style home.

— Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 S. 13th St., for renovation of a public building. It was dedicated in 1894, under the directive of Bishop James Schwabach, and includes altars made by Hackner and Sons Co. The renovation, which retained the integrity of the original architecture of the church, took about two years and was completed in 2004.
