2 dead in Stevens Point plane crash

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Two people died when their light plane crashed and burned at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport.

Police Sgt. Tony Babl said the crash happened about 5 p.m. Monday, and the plane went down in a clearing east of a runway but on airport property.

The single-engine plane apparently had taken off and was returning to the airport, although the circumstances weren’t all known, he said.

“Frankly, now we’ve got more questions than answers,” police Capt. Jim Dowling said at a news conference Monday evening.

Authorities did not release identities of the victims.

Dowling said the man who owned the plane was believed to be one of those killed.

The Federal Aviation Administration had been contacted and was expected to have investigators on the scene Tuesday morning.
