Western degree plan approved by system board

.
The Wisconsin Technical College System Board of Directors approved the collaborative associate of science degree for Western Technical College on Tuesday.

The proposal will let Western Technical College offer a two-year associate of science liberal arts degree that could be transferred for pursuing a four-year degree if desired.
The proposal is designed to prepare students to enter bachelor’s programs with junior status at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, but could be used by Western students to attend any other four-year college that would admit them.

The goal of the two-year degree is to propel students into four-year degree programs and ultimately increase the number of bachelor’s degree holders in the region, said Lee Rasch, president of Western.

The proposal is to now go on to the UW System Board of Regents in August. If passed by both boards, the transfer program would be available to students in spring 2009, Rasch said.

The associate of science degree would include a minimum of 64 credits, the majority from classes at Western in courses such as English, math, natural science and health and wellness. About 16 to 20 of the credits would be taken at UW-L in courses such as humanities, arts and foreign languages.

The program would be limited to 30 students the first year, Rasch said, with a goal of later phasing in more students.

Three years ago, Western created a similar associate of arts transfer option with Viterbo University.

" This is news? Our own local 'On Too Many Boards was given an appointment to the WTSC Board, and with that came an appointment to the UW Regents. Ponder whether a portion of this program has been enacted to boost enrollment at both institutions. That's fine, except they need to address peripheral problems like, 'parking? This Boards can virtually do anything they want. Even if it on the backs of adjacent neighbors. "
