News Trackers: Jackson County judge, Binsfeld trial, WTC transfer degree

.
Jackson County judge

  • WHAT WE KNEW: Gov. Jim Doyle put the call out last week for applicants for the Jackson County circuit judge position that will be left vacant when Judge Gerald Laabs retires at the end of July. The vacancy came about when Judge-elect Eric Stutz died of cancer last month. Stutz was elected after running unopposed in the April election.
  • WHAT'S NEW: Black River Falls

attorneys Thomas Lister and James Ritland both announced Monday

they are interested in the position. Lister has practiced law in Black

River Falls since 1973 and was Jackson County district attorney and corporation counsel from 1975 to 1980. Ritland, who started his law practice in Black River Falls in 1978, was elected Jackson County district attorney in 1980. Jackson County District Attorney Gerald Fox reportedly has ruled out running for the post

and Jackson County Corporation Counsel Mark Skolos still is

considering whether to seek the post.

  • WHAT'S NEXT: The governor’s office will take applications through May 23.

    Binsfeld trial delayed

  • WHAT WE KNEW: Walter C. Binsfeld, 41, of 714 Jackson St., was set for trial June 2 after he was accused of shooting his wife at the couple’s home

July 20, 2007. Binsfeld has pleaded not guilty and not guilty by mental disease or defect to attempted first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, intimidation of a victim, felony aggravated battery and four counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

  • WHAT'S NEW: Binsfeld’s trial was taken off the calendar Tuesday because Binsfeld no longer qualifies for a public defender after receiving a lump sum Social Security disability payout. Binsfeld’s new attorneys, Jeffrey Mochalski and Galen Pittman, asked La Crosse County Circuit Judge Todd Bjerke for more time to prepare their case. A psychological evaluation also has not been complete, said Deputy District Attorney Loralee Clark.

  • WHAT'S NEXT: A status conference in the case is set for 9 a.m. June 17.

    Two-year transfer degree at Western

  • WHAT WE KNEW: Western Technical College, working with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, developed a plan for a two-year associate of science liberal arts degree at Western that could be transferred for pursuing a four-year degree if desired. The proposal would allow students to enter UW-L’s bachelor’s programs at junior status, but could be used by Western students to attend any other four-year college that would admit them.

  • WHAT’S NEW: The Wisconsin Technical College System Board of Directors on Tuesday approved allowing Western to offer the associate of science degree.

  • WHAT’S NEXT: The UW System Board of Regents will consider the proposal in August. If the regents approve, the transfer program would be available to students in spring 2009, Western officials said.

" "attend any other four-year college that would admit them." 'would admit them', a key phrase here. There is no question in my ind that a large portion of this new program is directed toward campus expansion, both campuses. Expansion is great if peripheral problems are addressed first, like parking. Rather than growing and then worrying about parking, on the shoulders of adjacent neighbors. Western already failed at a co-parking venture with County after they were to tear down the Admin building? UWL?, wait until we see the stadium parking after they near fill the 8000 seat facility. Grow at whatever cost? "
