" Having vacationed in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Nunavat, British Columbia and Alaska (as well as Northern Minnesota) I can tell you that the only fuzzie, cuddly bears are in cartoons. I've been charged, threatened and hounded by brown, black, cinnimon, grizzly, kodiak and polar bears. A bear is a predator, plain and simple. When that attack a human or cat/dog, the smaller animal is going to be the loser. As I said earlier, I'll be packing heat and sending this threat to children and man (and beast) into his/her happy hunting ground. "

" Anna, """seldom attack people""" ... that doesn't say "never attack" ... that's the concern.
So, since you've been lucky, we all should just say "ok", no biggy. Go eat some veggies.
I think a more prudent article would have been how to deal with encounters as to not provoke, and if the bear takes an interest, what to do then.
Look up 'bear pepper spray' in google, that's about the best non-lethal defense to carry within city limits. Don't carry a gun up there, you'll be the bad guy.
I say, just let the bear have the 'nice ecosystem' and till the trails.
I'm going hiking up there with honey all over me tomorrow, since it poses no threat! shesh "

Well then I'm going to approach it and pet it since there is no risk! Then if I get hurt I can sue the Trib for making such a ridiculous claim!
Never ceases to amaze me. "

" I swear some people are ignorant. I live around bears every day and they seldom attack people unless it's a sow with cubs or it's near a food source.
I've come upon bears in the wilderness several times and they usually simply leave at the same time you leave (Common Sense, a natural bear will avoid humans and leaves the area--seems like you're one of those 'bear experts' you criticize). Problem in this area is people aren't used to living with bears so it's possible a bear will be habituated and become a problem bear. "

" Interesting how we have all these "bear experts" who think they are qualified to tell us all what a bear will or won't do. I wonder how many bears Mr. Morgan, or these other "experts," has interacted with out there in the woods. The scary thing about bears has always been that they are unpredictable, and they don't seem to have a great fear of humans. Best to keep a lot of distance between you and them. "

" I was running with my 2 dogs on the Sumac trail this morning when one of my dogs first saw the bear. My dogs and I just stopped and looked at the bear which was sitting about 15 feet from where we were on the trail. The bear just looked at us as we slowly-then very quickly left the area. I was pretty scared at the time but I've been pretty excited about the encounter ever since. "
