The Hartford Police Department used the occasion of National Police Memorial Day to honor Marshal Leonard Scherger with the ceremony in the Common Council chambers.
Scherger was 33 when he was fatally shot on May 21, 1904 while questioning three suspicious men in a railroad yard. The murder was never solved.
On hand for the ceremony were Scherger’s niece, Bernice Scherger, and her daughter Barbara Dudec, communications officer with the Hartford police.
Scherger’s name was added three years ago to the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial and the National Law Enforcement Memorial.
