The popular bar also plans to start serving soup, salad and sandwiches at all hours.
Efforts to ban smoking in workplaces throughout Wisconsin have failed and at times have led to hundreds of heated comments from visitors at our Web site.
Here’s a sample of what our readers had to say about a smoke-free Bodega:
La Crosse Taxpayer wrote: “Good. Now all the whiners have someplace to go! Now let’s see how well they support this place, and I hope all the smokers boycott them just to prove a point!”
bluebunny wrote: “Taxpayer, you are the one that sounds like the whiner here. Your comment reminds me of something that I would hear from my 11-year-old. Breathing in smoke is not good for you — that is a pretty black and white issue. People who don’t enjoy breathing in smoke caused by others’ habit certainly shouldn’t be called whiners. I have never been to Bodega, but now that it is the only smoke-free bar downtown, I will definitely make it a priority. Congratulations and good luck to the owner.”
GOD_HIMSELF wrote: “I’ll be drinking at the Bodega. Thanks. I hope all the smokers boycott the place, too — then I don’t have to walk out the door and see them all huddled up like bums sucking on their precious cancer sticks.”
krissy wrote: “Isn’t this the way it should be. If a bar owner would like to go smoke free, let HIM make the decision. If the Bodega owner feels going smoke free will not hurt him, good for him. Let’s not have big brother make ALL of our decisions.”
A real race in the 94th?
Democrat Cheryl Hancock, a Holmen Democrat, is expected to announce her candidacy today for the 94th District Assembly seat held by Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem.
Some visitors at www.lacrossetribune.com heralded her candidacy as a real challenge to the incumbent, who has held the seat with little trouble.
Hancock is president of the Holmen School Board and executive director of the Scenic Bluffs Chapter of the American Red Cross, so she starts her run with more name recognition than some of Huebsch’s recent opponents.
But don’t underestimate just how conservative much of the 94th District really is: It’s not the same district Virgil Roberts represented all those years ago.
Here’s what a few site visitors had to say about Hancock’s candidacy:
mr. miagi wrote: “Best of luck to Ms. Hancock. I really hope she will oust the epitome of a GOP rubber stamp, Mike Huebsch.”
Mack wrote: “Let’s hope there’s some leadership here. Huebsch strictly follows the party line or the special interests and has yet to bring a fresh idea.”
Lacrossenative1 wrote: “This is great news! Good luck, Mrs. Hancock!”
CommonSense wrote: “All I can say is God help us! I will rally support for Huebsch all the more now with this wannabe clawing her way up. At least Huebsch supports the average man and woman, unlike Doyle, who just wants to tax us out of statehood. At least know I know for sure she is a Democrat — before one could only speculate ... that explains everything.”
Triple L wrote: “I think it’s great that Huebsch will have a challenger. How about we take a cue from the rest of the country and try to have a positive election. We really have two choices: act like adults and debate the issues or act like children and make personal attacks like are being done on this blog. ... It’s time to take the high road. “
RealityCheckNeeded wrote: “... I am looking forward to reading her campaign finance report, which is required in the state of WI. http://elections.state.wi.us/section.asp?linkid=156&locid=47.”
Vicky wrote: “Good luck, Cheryl! Maybe this will wake up Mikey and make him spend more time in his own district and listen to his own constituents for a change.”
Now that’s classic La Crosse behavior
Visitors at www.lacrossetribune.com had plenty to say about the arrest of a naked guy in the middle of a street, unable to find his mom’s house, and the drunken climber of a downtown power pole.
The former was arrested for lewd and lascivious behavior and possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms, and the latter was cited for public intoxication. Here’s a sample of readers’ comments:
Willie wrote: “Now we know how La Crosse residents are spending their tax stimulus money!”
HonestAbe wrote: “The mushroom man, well .... Someone failed to tell him what a safe amount was. If it was a controlled substance this probably wouldn’t have happened. (Controlled should mean legal — why do the cops call the drugs that are out of control controlled? ... I’ll never get that) ...”
Mack wrote: “... A 0.20 percent blood-alcohol level is below average for La Crosse.”
homer wrote: “I wonder what his mom would’ve said had he found her house? It’s probably best the cops found him first!”
