Riding for Richardson: Bikers, friends reach out to fellow rider with cancer

.
Bikers help each other when trouble comes, according to Sue Tuma, a motorcycle rider from Cashton, Wis.

“Bikers are a family. When one of them is hurt, we all hurt,” Tuma said. “They are there for you, whatever you go through, rain or shine.”
Tuma has encouraged area motorcycle riders and bike shops to help support her close friend and fellow biker Jim Richardson of Mindoro, Wis., who was diagnosed with cancer in November 2007.

So motorcycle shops and bikers sent motorcycle-themed T-shirts to Tuma. After collecting more than 100, she stitched them into four quilts. Two will be auctioned off; a drawing will be held for one during a benefit for Jim on Saturday, June 7. The fourth quilt goes to Jim.

“I felt called to do this instantly because Jim lost his job, and I knew it would be costly,” Tuma said.

Jim initially had no idea Tuma and other friends were organizing the benefit for him, he said.

“I thank the Lord,” he said. “We were really blessed by friends like that.”

Jim, 55, was diagnosed with stage four squamous cell carcinoma of the lymph nodes. Tuma and another friend of Jim’s, Kathy Wagner, hope to raise about $20,000 from the benefit to help cover medical bills that Jim and his wife, Bonnie, have incurred.

Jim and Bonnie have been there for others in hard times, said Tuma.

“They are special people,” Wagner said. “They would do anything for anyone.”

Tuma met Jim and Bonnie when Tuma and her husband were involved in a motorcycle accident during a large group ride. Jim and Bonnie stayed with Tuma’s husband and the bike while Tuma left in the

ambulance.

Tuma and Wagner said they’ve been amazed by people’s generosity. Among other items, they received a football signed by the Green Bay Packers and a Packers helmet signed by Brett Favre. The items will be auctioned at the benefit.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans agreed to donate 33 cents for every dollar raised from the benefit.

The benefit also will include a bake sale, live auction, fish bowl auction, activities for kids, food, bike run, bike show and more. For more information visit www.suezquilts.com. Entrance is free.

Tickets for $5 or six for $25 can be purchased at the benefit or beforehand to win a .22-caliber rifle; king- or queen-size Harley T-shirt quilt; or cash prizes. You need not be present to win. To buy tickets for the drawing, call (608) 269-4088 or (608) 786-3284.

" It is too bad that whenever anyone in the town tries to help someone out there are a couple of big mouths that can do nothing but complain. They really need to get a life and wake up. This article is about helping a man and his family that has cancer and a few people riding to help him out. If you have a problem with that or loud bikes, you have a real mental problem. You need to get to a shrink quick and maybe someone will be kind enough to put on a ride to help you with the bills but I doubt it. Talk about the article, not your personal problems. "

" Some bikes pour out noise like a Steiger Construction truck pours out smoke. A loud bike is not much good for more than bar-hopping though and people are really getting tired of the loud pipe conformists trying to show off. "

" Hey LAX - you may want to find a place to retreat the weekend of June 27th. There are going to about 20,000 of us pesky noisemakers ripping through town. Wish I knew where you lived, I be sure to stop by. "

" I agree with LAX, but he shouldn't just stop there. Don't forget the semis, how about the local high school bands practicing outside, oh ya the baseball games where people cheer and clap and make all kinds of noise, the police sirens...another loud noise!!! Get a life dude.. "

" Geezz there LAX... I can appreciate your concern about loud motorcycles, but is this the time to gripe about them? Here is a dude that is in a bad way and these other people are trying to help him. If I was the "man" I don't think I would be standing there with a ticket book handing out noise tickets at this event. Better place and time for that. "

" LAX, then we should all keep our lawn mowers, weed trimmers, power washers etc. in the garage and not use them. If you are going to complain about loud noise then do not let any resident in the area catch you mowing and trimming your lawn. The same thing applies, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! You should really put half the effort you show here complaining toward worth while efforts and the coulee region would truly be a better place to live. "

LAX wrote on May 30, 2008 9:11 AM:

" There is NO RIGHT to impose loud motorcycles on the rest of the residents who also pay taxes and expect peace and quiet! If you don't have adequate mufflers, you deserve a ticket -- and yes, just like a loud car, truck or the fools with the loud stereos! NO EXCEPTIONS! And it isn't once or twice a week -- it's anywhere from 10 to 20 times each evening that some fool with straight pipes blasts away from the nearby intersection. And don't give us that BS about how loud motorcycles are more safe! I plan to call the mayor and police today to demand noise enforcement at this event! And anyone else who is sick and tired of loud motorcycles needs to do the same! "

" We bought our first motorcycle from you. We moved from the city to your neck of the woods because you were here and we wanted to raise our children in a small close-knit community away from drugs and crime. Our children excelled in life and loved it here, all that we had hoped for when we moved. I appreciate your adventurism and friendship. I pray for the hope that we share. "

Ken wrote on May 30, 2008 8:31 AM:

" Where is that from Lax, please don't forget to mention automobiles and semi trucks loud exhausts also. While you are at it, call city hall about the high taxes, high gas prices and any other thing that you can come up with. Start looking for the positives in life sometime, it may help your dim view of everything. "

Mack wrote on May 30, 2008 8:21 AM:

" Be careful around Brownsville, MN, there is a nutjob in a large tan Toyota truck who likes to see how close he can get to bikes at full throttle. "

OnaRes wrote on May 30, 2008 7:55 AM:

" Hey Lax, Then keep your lawn mower in the garage and cut your lawn by hand, most lawn mowers break noise level ordinances. Is that all you have to gripe about is the once or twice a week a motorcyle disturbs your peace. Get a life. "

LAX wrote on May 30, 2008 7:50 AM:

" Hopefully all La Crosse area law enforcement agencies including police and sheriff departments will ENFORCE city noise ordinances and ticket every motorcycle with inadequate or non-existing mufflers. It is time to cut the noise -- NO EXCEPTIONS! If you agree, call your city police department, chief of police and mayor! "
