Super seniors: String players among the best in the class of 2008

.
Some of the La Crosse area’s finest high school senior musicians played in the orchestra.

Eleven string players and two percussionists are among the best musicians in the Class of 2008. K.C. Peck of Central and Daniel Jacobs of Aquinas lead a talented group of senior musicians, as determined through nominations from area music teachers and others in the music field.

Peck, who has been honored for her violin playing and singing, will major in vocal performance at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Jacobs, who played in the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, plans to major in viola performance at UW-Madison.

Two other string players from Central — cellist Kielty Wintersteen and violinist Krysta Koralesky— joined Peck and Jacobs as members of Busya Lugovier’s string quartet at Viterbo University.

Wintersteen will study music and math education at the University of Indiana, and Koralesky will attend UW-Madison. Melissa Martin, a Central violinist, will attend St. Cloud State University.

Onalaska High School has two super senior string players — Madeline Senger, a cellist since fourth grade and a member of La Crosse Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Kelly Miller, a violist since fourth grade. Senger will attend Luther College, while Miller plans to pursue a career in chemical engineering at Iowa State University.

Logan has four talented senior string players — Katie Jolley, who plays clarinet and cello; Donna Miller, violin; Devin Harter, cello; and Quentin Woods, violin.

Harter and Woods will attend UW-L, Jolley will go to UW-Platteville and Miller will attend Black Hills State University (S.D.).

Jon Fendt of Sparta High School was a percussionist in the Wisconsin School Music Association all-state orchestra and the National Band Association all-state band. Fendt plans to major in music performance at UW-L.

Michael Sartin-Tarm, a Central snare drummer, timpanist and pianist, was awarded exemplary state solo/ensemble soloist four times and was a member of an all-state band. Sartin-Tarm will attend UW-Madison.

Megan Rinehart of Holmen High School leads a group of talented senior vocal and instrumental musicians. Rinehart won 38 state solo and ensemble first-place awards. High school teachers nominated seniors for this year’s class.
