Vandals hit Viroqua cemetery

.
VIROQUA, Wis. — A cash reward has been offered for information on the vandals who toppled or spray-painted graffiti on about 40 markers at Viroqua Cemetery sometime before Monday morning.

Some of the 20 overturned markers weighed more than 1,000 pounds. Another 20 were spray painted, some with hate symbols.
Viroqua police Officer Pat McGuire examines graffiti left on the marker of former Wisconsin Gov. Jeremiah Rusk at Viroqua Cemmetery in Viroqua, Wis.

The most egregious damage was to the cemetery’s largest marker for former state Gov. Jeremiah Rusk, which had graffiti on all four sides.

“In my 30 years of working here, I’ve never seen any vandalism this bad,” said Clair Morrison, a longtime caretaker at the cemetery. “There’s no sense to it. I can’t see what anyone would get out of it.”

Several small markers had been moved or taken out of the ground and then put back upside down. Also, some flags that had been placed by veteran’s graves for Memorial Day were taken out of the ground and reinserted upside down.

A marker for one couple, who died more than three decades ago, was spray painted with the words “Its dead get over it” on the front and a swastika on the back.

On Sunday afternoon, the cemetery hosted the Viroqua Historical Society’s Cemetery Walk, a tour that drew about 40 people while volunteers told stories about the residents buried there. The cemetery was undamaged at that point.

Viroqua police are investigating and ask that anyone with information call (608) 637-2121. Vernon County Crime Stoppers also has offered up to $1,000 in cash for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible. Crime Stoppers can be reached at (608) 637-8477, 1-800-657-6868, or on its Web site at www.vernoncrimestoppers.com. Those with information can remain anonymous.

" My grandparents are buried in that cemetary. I'll have to go out and check to see if their marker was vandalized. The really sad part is that the stones that were turned upside down were on the graves of orphaned children.

Come forward and confess or you'll end up doing a lot of explaining to St. Peter when you eventually die. "

" Can't spell, don't know which way the swastika points. Then attack a bunch of grave stones in the dark. Whats next for these , play with matches. But then you deface the flag and Vet's graves. Boy, I bet your real proud of yourselves. We use to have a name for you clowns. Can't use it here. Guess what kiddies, ya got no points for being cowards. "

" What we are really missing here is some stupid comment by the "name du jour" poster about how all of this is directly related to the benefits the teachers get as part of their collective bargaining agreement. "

" I'm sorry, but I do not believe that the parents are to blame. I did many things (nothing like this act of vandalism) in my younger days that I am not proud of. However, I was raised by wonderful & responsible parents and none of what I did was a reflection of their parenting. I was on my own path. These vandals may not even be kids! We are assuming that. I agree the guilty needs to be punished, but this is not about parenting or changing laws (even though I agree). Remember the real victims here, the families and the disrespect of the deceased. "

" I still blame the parents. Having been given the proper up-bringing these kids would NOT have dared damage ANYONES property, knowing it was wrong. As a parent you teach your child about life and of the consequences of our actions, and responsibility. These kids never thought about how their actions would affect others. Early on parents are pushing their children into day care or pawning them off on to someone else. Start being a parent and take your children with you. Children aren't born to know everything: they need to be talked to, encouraged, and shown the real world outside the classroom as you as their teacher. You'd be surprised how much disciple these kids need then, they just know better. "

" Thanks Pickles. You are right on. Parental rights to discipline kids have been lost to to the "time out" crowd. Sure I have argued this many times and never gotten a real answer as to what to do when "time outs" don't work.
As far as the people who did this damage. They should be hung, and judged by the peoples markers they have defaced. "

" In all honesty, you can't hold parents accountable in a society that refuses to let them punish their children accordingly. I think we can all agree that the kids who did this deserve a good lashing and then some. But obviously that is not going to happen--at least not legally, as the "lasher" would become a criminal. There is something quite wrong with this picture when parents are no longer allowed any control over their kids. Yet they are held accountable by society. Let's change the laws! "

" These kids may "just be kids", but they are also criminals now. I say throw the book at them. Lock those brats up for a while, force them to do about 300 hours of community service, AND make them pay for damages. That should teach them. "

" Now, lets be sensible, parents that were present at the service on memorial day, to hear the speach from a nurse that wrote a book, to watch their sons or daughters march and play at the event.Brought their family to attend and be part of such a event know were their children are Sunday nights.Maybe we need to make sure once we find out who, must attend next years service, maybe hand out chairs and music stands, cleanup the cemmetery, but most inportant listen to the people that express themselves for all to hear what respect to all mankind they believe in. Hope to see you there next year. "

" This is a terrible act. I hope they find the responsible party or parties. These are the ones who should upright and clean the stones, make formal, public apologies to the families and the community and do community service. This is a hate crime in the strictest sense of the word. Blame the parents? Maybe. But these people are obviously old enough to make their own decisions and suffer the consequences. Stop putting the blame on everyone except the guilty party! "

" This is a terrible act of vandalism! My heart goes out to all those families faced with cleaning, repairing, or replacing those grave markers. What a total lack of respect for the deceased. I hope these vandals are caught and punished. Maybe they should have to face the families? Often times when hit with the real repercussions of what they did, it has a huge impact on the offender. "

" Try using WD40 to clean off the spray paint from the smooth surfaces. It works on metal and wood so maybe it would clean stone. "

katie wrote on Jun 3, 2008 8:53 AM:

" momof8- do NOT lump all "parents today" together. Kids will be kids and they will do stupid things. Many times, regardless of their upbringing. Many times, stunts like these are pulled by the "honor roll" students who would "never do such a thing" Don't pass judgement so quickly on who you think is responsible. "

momof8 wrote on Jun 3, 2008 8:48 AM:

" It's obvious this is the work of a bunch of kids. I blame the parents. Parents today are so caught up in themselves that they don't have time for their children, nor do they say NO. It all starts at home folks, hold the parents responsible. Their the ones that let their children run, or push them off on someone else. If the vandals are found get the parents to open their pocket book, they should also be made to join their child in cleaning up the grave markers. "

" These animals have no regard for others. These are terribly appalling and vicious actions that deserve severe consequences. I can't imagine being a spouse or sibling or parent to one of the deceased - my heart goes out to all of you! "

mby wrote on Jun 3, 2008 8:25 AM:

" Seriously,do they have no respect. How would they feel if someone did that to their mother or fathers or dead brother or sisters grave. Oh, wait they must not have that since it is obvious they were raised with no morals. So, I am guessing they were an orphan. :P "
