LaVern ‘Vern’ R. Grobe
MADISON — LaVern “Vern” R. Grobe, 81, passed away surrounded with the love of his family Sunday, June 1, 2008.

He was born May 2, 1927, in Parshall, N.D., the son of Arthur and Emma (Giese) Loock. Arthur passed away in 1929. Emma remarried August Grobe, who then adopted Vern.

In 1950, Vern joined the U.S. Army and served for two years as a radio operator while stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. In his civilian life, he worked many adventurous jobs — as a Black Hills gold miner in Lead, S.D., a surveyor on an offshore rig near Texas and a seismographer for an oil company in Oklahoma — before finding his first true love, Arlene Hovda. They moved to St. Paul, Minn., where they were united in marriage July 9, 1955. They raised three daughters together.

He advanced to professional management of private country clubs and enjoyed a 35-year career in the St. Paul area, Bismarck, N.D., and La Crosse. In 1972, he lost his wife in a tragic accident. After some time, in 1982, his other true love, Sharon Hatleberg, came into his life, when they chose to marry and merge families on Sept. 4, 1982. Vern worked tirelessly at the La Crosse Country Club until his retirement, after which they relocated to Sharon’s hometown, Madison. There, he worked as the bar manager of the VFW Day Post 7591 to stay out of trouble and do what he was best at: developing friendships and serving his comrades. Other favorite pursuits of his included playing golf, cards and pool. He held longtime memberships to the CMAA (Club Managers Association of America), American Legion and Elks.

Vern was deeply loved by his extended and blended families, and is survived by his wife, Sharon Grobe; his daughters, Sandy (Greg) Davison and Stacy (Steve) Dresen; stepchildren, Robin (John) Kneebone, Barry (Penny) Hart, Darcy (Doug) Clary, Stacy Horne and Jenifer Horne; 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty (Mel) Kackman; a brother, Norm (Carol) Grobe; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Arlene Grobe; and a daughter Sheila Barnard.

Sincere thanks to all our tremendous family, friends and neighbors, and to the warm and supportive medical staff who have been so reassuring through this difficult transition.

Memorial services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2126 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, with Pastor Gerry Kuhnke officiating. A visitation will be held at the church Wednesday, June 4, from 10 a.m. until time of services. A celebration of Vern’s life will be held at Pettibone Resort, 333 Park Plaza Drive, La Crosse, on Thursday, June 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. Ryan Funeral Home & Cremations Services of Madison are assisting the family with arrangements.
