BloodCenter hopes drive inspires more people to donate

.
Summertime is a slow time for blood donation, said Shari Vanderbush, branch operations supervisor with the BloodCenter of Wisconsin.

The BloodCenter of Wisconsin is trying to change that with a two-day blood drive that started Tuesday and continues until 5 p.m. today.

The combination of losing donors from school blood drives and families caught up in summer activities is a recipe for fewer donations, Vanderbush said.

However, some like Cari Servais of La Crosse will give blood regardless of the time of year. Servais is a big fan of donating blood to the BloodCenter of Wisconsin after her mother was sick in the hospital in July 2006 and needed blood platelets. She said donating to the BloodCenter of Wisconsin ensures her donation stays at area hospitals.

The BloodCenter of Wisconsin is the sole supplier of blood to Gundersen Lutheran and Franciscan Skemp and several other area hospitals, Vanderbush said.

The need for blood at the two hospitals in La Crosse is strong, said Wayne Bottner, medical director of the blood bank at Gundersen Lutheran. It takes about 12,000 donors to meet the need for red blood cells for the two La Crosse hospitals for one year, he said.

People who donate at La Crosse area blood drives donate about two pints, or units, of blood for every three pints that they use from the BloodCenter of Wisconsin.

“There is a tremendous need in the community to increase the support of the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, where we get all of our blood from,” Bottner said.

It is harder nowadays to get people to donate, he added.

“People are busy and don’t have a lot of time. ... If we could donate over the Internet, we’d probably get a lot more people to donate. Unfortunately, we haven’t figured out just how to do that yet,” he joked.

The goal of the event is to get 200 pints of blood during the two-day drive. The BloodCenter of Wisconsin was well on its way two hours into the drive with about 60 pints, Vanderbush said.

" What nalydj doesn't say is that the team they refer to that processes the blood is in Milwuakee and there is no guarantee as is implied that the blood product will come back to the La Crosse hospitals. "

" Plasma you get paid for is used for Benificial medications, and helps alot of people but it's not used for people that need blood. Yes , it takes time to do..But it also takes a cost to process that blood, To check it for Saftey reasons.
Donating Voluntary not only helps save lives it makes ya feel good about yourself ! "

" JBK Response.
After donating blood to The Bloodcenter, processing is performed by a large team of highly skilled professionals dedicated to ensure our blood supply is undoubtedly safe. It is then distributed to area hospitals used in saving the lives of many members of our community. This includes those undergoing cancer treatments, involved in traumas, having surgeries, giving premature babies the chance to live, and countless others. The Bloodcenter has DIRECT impact on out community! Yet, when one donates plasma and receives monetary compensation, FDA regulations prohibit its use for direct human transfusion, which is necessary for life saving outcomes. You can not put a price on saving three lives in one hour, so ultimately it is your choice what is more important, $60 in a week, or three lives in one hour, one of which could be your own or that of one you love? You choose. "

" Blood/plasma that is being used for human health needs can not be paid for - it has to be voluntary. When you are giving plasma you are paid for your time not your plasma.

And Cari is wrong, giving blood here does not guarantee that this specific blood stays here, you will never see Bloodcenter people say that. "

" They tend to hold their drives when the majority of people are working. Evenings or weekends would better accommodate most schedules. "

" I can make $60/week by giving plasma twice a week. However, I could only donate blood once every 8 weeks without compensation.

Why can a person be compensated for plasma, but not for blood? It's basically the same process for the person being stuck with the needle. Perhaps if people were compensated for their giving their blood, there wouldn't be a constant shortage. I'm guessing that hospitals do not give this donated blood away to their patients for free.

If you are thinking this is just being greedy by giving plasma instead of donating blood, remember that you can take your plasma money and donate it to other worthy causes, such as flood relief or United Way. "
