WEST SALEM, Wis. — Marvin L. Baker, 80, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Lakeview Health Care Center, West Salem. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lewis Valley Lutheran Church cemetery, rural Holmen, Wis. Zwickey Funeral Homes Galesville (Wis.) chapel is assisting the family.
Gerald ‘Jerry’ W. Bartheld
Gerald “Jerry” W. Bartheld, 72, of La Crosse died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
Jerry was born in Lansing, Iowa, on March 13, 1936, to Orren and Myrtle (Rettinger) Bartheld and graduated from Lansing High School in 1955. He married Donna M. Middendorf on Sept. 14, 1956, at First Presbyterian Church in Lansing.
Jerry worked for J.F. Brennan Co. in La Crosse for more than 30 years before retiring in 1996. He was an avid golfer and was a fixture at Walsh Golf Center for many years. He and Donna also enjoyed spending their winters together in Arizona following his retirement.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Donna; one daughter, Danielle (Mike) Page of Mindoro, Wis.; one son, Craig (Lisa) Bartheld of Onalaska, Wis.; five grandsons, Matt Geary and Elliott, Griffen, Bennett and Harrison Bartheld; one brother, Donald (Darlene) Bartheld of Lakewood, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Mary Bartheld of Rogers, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Glenn Bartheld.
In accordance with Jerry’s wishes, his body will be cremated and there will be no services.

Walter J. Elsheimer
NEW ALBIN, Iowa — Walter J. Elsheimer, 93, of New Albin died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born Jan. 7, 1915, in Crooked Creek township, Houston County, Minn., to Philip and Bertha (Neumann) Elsheimer Sr. On Oct. 12, 1945, he married Edna Neumann at Peace Church in Crooked Creek, and they celebrated more than 62 years of marriage. Together, they farmed in Crooked Creek township all of their lives. Walter also had a love for his horses, and he used them in farming his land.
Survivors include his wife, Edna of New Albin; one daughter, Faye (Keith) Beneke of New Albin; four grandchildren, Brian, Tony, Russell and Donna; and one sister, Bertha Elsheimer of Hokah, Minn.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Wayne; one sister, Louise Richards; and three brothers, Philip Jr., August and Carl Elsheimer.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. at Evangelical Church of Peace, Crooked Creek township, rural Freeburg, Minn. The Rev. Dr. William J. Reese will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at New Albin Townhouse and Chapel on Thursday from 4 to
8 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.

MABEL, Minn. — Marian S. Hanson, 94, of Mabel died Monday, June 16, 2008, at Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, Iowa. Mabel B. Larsen
HOLMEN, Wis. — Mabel B. Larsen, 87, of Holmen passed away Monday, June 16, 2008, in her home.
She was born Thursday, April 28, 1921, to Oscar and Nora (Larson) Gubrud. She was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Lutheran Church in New Auburn, Wis. In 1946, Mabel married Victor E. Larsen in the same church in New Auburn. Her husband, Victor, preceded her in death in March 2005.
Mabel attended schools in Chippewa Falls, Wis., New Auburn and Eau Claire, Wis., and graduated from New Auburn High School in 1939. She taught Sunday school in Eau Claire and Racine, Wis., and also taught Bible school in Eau Claire. She was an assistant Girl Scout leader in Eau Claire. She was a current member of Holmen Lutheran Church.
Her family and friends were her greatest joys. She loved her home, beautiful flowers, nature and birds. She could see art in all the beauty of nature. Mabel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved traveling with her husband in his retirement.
Mabel was the beloved mother of Karen (Fred) Brinkman of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Terry (Barb) Larsen of Holmen; grandmother of Matthew Brinkman (friends Bobbie and Hannah) of Wisconsin Rapids, Kerri (Brad) Martinson of Port Edwards, Wis., and Bethany and Katelyn Larsen of Holmen; great-grandmother of Austin Martinson of Port Edwards; sister of Alvina (Martin) Carlson of Chippewa Falls and Ona Bailkey of Chetek, Wis.; and sister-in-law of Angie Gubrud of St. Paul, Minn., Betty Gubrud of Chetek, and Duane and Olivia Larsen of McFar-land, Wis. She also is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor; brothers, Arnold and Edward Gubrud; brother-in-law, Glenn Bailkey; and brother-in-law/sister-in-law, Laverne and Millie Larsen.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Oak Grove Cemetery chapel, 1407 La Crosse St. in La Crosse, with Pastor Glenn Borreson officiating.

Helen J. Lewis
WEST SALEM, Wis. — Helen J. Lewis, 75, of West Salem died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at her home.
She was born March 1, 1933, in Black River Falls, Wis., to Ray and Myrtle (Lundberg) Erickson. Helen was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1947. On Oct. 10, 1957, she married David Lewis, and he preceded her in death June 30, 2003. Helen and her husband lived in various places in Wisconsin as a result of David’s construction work as a crane operator. They enjoyed attending steam engine shows and music fests.
A loving caregiver, Helen worked in the health field, both privately and in facilities, such as Lakeview Health Center and Mulder Health Care Facility, both in West Salem. She was known for her large collection of figurines, pictures and other items featuring owls. Helen enjoyed a trip to Scandinavia, where she explored her Norwegian and Swedish heritage. She was a friend to many, always willing to help and to listen over a cup of coffee at the Neshonoc Octagon House, where she and David spent most of their married life. Helen was interested in preserving local history and was pleased to see the Octagon House recently moved near its original site. Her friends were a great comfort to Helen during her illness, and she treasured them all. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by a son, William (Connie) Lewis of West Salem; three grandchildren, Heather (Cade) Brandeau, Chad Lewis (special friend, Tammy Ferguson) and Tami (Josh) Harr; five great-grandchildren, Brianna, Mayzee, Dakota, Madalyn and Hayden; two brothers, Charles (Sandy) Erickson of Moose Lake, Minn., and James (Charlotte) Erickson of Balsam Lake, Wis.; one sister, Dorothy Prell of West Salem; nephews and nieces, Dennis (Katy) Sahr of Florida, Michael (Dianna) Sahr of Tomah, Wis., Barbara Ranger of La Crosse, Vicki Erickson of Minneapolis, Mary (Homer) Prell of Phoenix, Tim Prell of West Salem, Kathy Prell of New Lisbon, Wis., John (Ann) Prell and Paul (Judy) Prell, both of Sparta, Wis., and Jeffery (Suzette) Erickson of Buffalo, Minn.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many special friends.
In addition to her husband, David, she was preceded in death by her parents, Ray Erickson and Myrtle Erickson Vandervort; her stepfather, Leon W. Vandervort; a son, David Lee Lewis; a brother, Donald (Leone) Erickson; and a sister, Cynthia Quinn.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 19, at 11 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard St., West Salem. The Revs. Martha J. Hampton and Ken Eggen will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, today from 5 to 7 p.m. and also at the church Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and may be given to the David Lee Lewis Scholarship Fund at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, West Salem, or to the West Salem Historical Society for the restoration of the Lewis Octagon House.
Judith Ann Lewis
ONALASKA, Wis. — Judith Ann Lewis, 72, of Onalaska passed away Monday, June 16, 2008, at her home.
She was born in Milwaukee on June 10, 1936, to Earl and Alice (Hassman) Vance. She graduated from Wauwatosa (Wis.) High School in 1954 and attended UW-Madison and graduated in 1959 with a degree in occupational therapy. On May 9, 1959, Judy and Carl Lewis were married in Elm Grove, Wis.
Judy was a loving wife and mother. She loved people and was very generous and kind to everyone she met. Judy enjoyed gardening and baking. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Judy is survived by her loving husband, Carl; a daughter, Laurie (Craig) Rinehardt of Madison; two sons, Robert (Kristina Sutjuanto) Lewis of West Milwaukee and David Lewis of Wauwatosa; three grandchildren, Caitlin, Carly and Julie; two sisters, Karen James and Janet Myers; a brother, Roger Vance; and many dear friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska. Burial will be in Onalaska Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home Saturday from 9 a.m. until the services.
Mary Ann ‘Mims’ Mettille
Mary Ann “Mims” Mettille, 77, of La Crosse and formerly of Winona, Minn., passed away on Sunday,
June 15, 2008, in her home.
She was born Nov. 2, 1930, in Winona to Peter and Gertrude (Niemczyk) Michalski. She married John L. Mettille on Feb. 5, 1949, in Winona at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church. Together, they raised eight children.
Mary Ann was a loving mother and wife. She was always passionate about the lives and interests of her family. Bird watching, poetry, gardening, road trips and sporting events were her favorite pastimes. She found her volunteer work at St. Francis very rewarding and found inspiration in Bible classes at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She participated regularly in prayer devotionals at Viterbo University and was a devout Catholic. She was very loved by her family and close circle of friends, who will miss her quick wit and playful sense of humor.
She is survived by her beloved husband, John; four sons, Edward (Cindy) of Onalaska, Wis., John Jr. (Shayla) of Versailles, Ky., Peter of La Crosse, and Jim (Sally) of Onalaska; four daughters, Ann (Larry) Heiman of Berkley Lake, Ga., Sue (Jim) Hill of La Crosse, Cindy Mettille of La Crosse and Catherine Mettille of Berkley Lake; a brother, Robert Michalski of California; brother-in-law/sister-in-law, Charles and Anita Mettille of Winona; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Thomas Mettille; a brother, Edward Michalski; and two sisters, Rose Duellman and Eleanor Schultz.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be today at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 S. 13th St., La Crosse. The Rev. Larry Berger will officiate, and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. today in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Winona. Friends may call at the church today from 9:30 a.m. until the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
