The Wheelmen were a powerful organization with 102,000 members, including the Wright Brothers and John D. Rockefeller. The Wheelmen still exist — they are now known as the League of American Bicyclists. This paving of the roads opened them to the fragile, unreliable automobile.
So next time you are driving your car and see those cyclists, give them their due. The roads are there because their ancestors paved it for you. Bikes have the right to ride on every road, and it is your responsibility to be vigilant and yield to them. They are vehicles of the road and as such must obey stop signs, stop lights, etc.
This doesn’t mean special treatment — just equal treatment. Start seeing bikes — there will only be more of them on the roads in the future, I guarantee it.
