City revving up for motorcycle event

.
As the La Crosse area prepares to welcome thousands of motorcycle fans later this week to S&S Cycle’s 50th anniversary celebration, the big question is just how many thousands there will be.

“I want to say 15,000 to 20,000 people,” said Howard Kelly, a spokesman for the company, which makes high-performance engine parts and engines for motorcycles at its locations in La Crosse and Viola, Wis. “It’s the company’s best guess.” But much depends on the weather, Kelly said.
Dave Clements, executive director of the La Crosse Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, guesses 10,000 to 30,000 people will show up. “I’m inclined to think it’s going to be on the higher end” of that range, he said. “But it’s purely a guess. We just don’t know.”

The celebration will be Friday through Sunday, but some preliminary events will be held Thursday.

Hotel rooms in the La Crosse area are booked up, Clements said. “There are some rooms in Winona,” he said. “One or two rooms open up around here now and then.”

The thousands who attend are expected to include some celebrities.

Comedian and “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno has been invited, but S&S officials don’t know whether he will attend, Kelly said. Last year, Leno received a custom-built motorcycle that involved collaboration by local firms S&S Cycle and DOUGZ Custom Paint & Fabrication, and by Mobil Exxon.

Motorcycle builder Jesse James, who is married to actress Sandra Bullock, is expected to attend. So is former race car driver Dan Gurney.

And Paul Sr., Paul Jr. and Mikey Teutul of Orange County Choppers, featured on the TV series “American Chopper,” will be in town with a motorcycle they’ve custom-built for the event. The celebration includes a public display and voting for 50 custom-built motorcycles, including the Teutuls’. The top builder will win $50,000.

“They are the celebrities,” Kelly said of the custom motorcycle builders who will show up with their creations. “They are coming from all over the world.”

La Crosse police also are gearing up for the event much like they do for Oktoberfest. More La Crosse officers will be on patrol, and outside officers will be brought in during the event, said police Capt. Gary Uting.

Third Street from La Crosse Street to Jay Street will be closed to automobile traffic 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday but will remain open to motorcycle parking.

Share the road

Local law enforcement advise motorists to be cautious of motorcycles and keep the following rules and tips in mind:

  • Motorcycles have all the rights and privileges of any other motor vehicle on the roadway.

  • Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane width — never try to share a lane.

  • Always make a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections.

  • Always signal before changing lanes or merging with traffic.

  • Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle — signals often are not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off.

  • Remember road conditions that are minor annoyances to other vehicles pose major hazards to motorcyclists.

" Wow, what a sour attitude LAX. My guess, you've been ticketed numberous times for noise violations. Sorry, I think this event is great, the bikes are very cool, and the riders are much more civilized than the usual downtown bar crowd. As for the noise it is no big deal, the ones that are truly annoying and need to be seriously ticketed are the sterios so loud that my house shake from them a block away, seriously. THAT is a real problem that slides way too often. "

How about this to all that are whining about noise: it's a bike rally! they make noise whether the pipes fit your criteria or not-they make noise. At times loud - it should be it's a bike rally! I really hope the cops use some sound discretion with our GUESTS for this ONCE IN A LIFETIME event. There is nothing wrong with extending courtesy, kindness, and charm to people here spending their hard earned money while here for a unique, exciting anniversary like this. S&S-you make the coulee region proud. Congratulations and stay strong "

And yes the bikers should all assemble in one spot at a designated time, and rap their pipes until their ear drums pop. After that , Expect, to get a ticket! My wife is fighting an illness that makes it difficult to sleep at night. Consequently she naps periodically during the day. It is NOT the lawn mowers that jolt her awake during these times , but rather the rapping of cycle pipes. I love the fact that you own a Harley, but keep it to yourself! "

A better idea would be to allow motorcycles to park on the Mobil site. Imagine... 12 acres of space for several thousand bikes, all within walking distance of S&S. "

I hope Lacrosse can plan and adapt for this weekend. This is going to be HUGE for the economy of our lacrosse. And the small towns in the area.
The last 3 days I rode for about 700 miles in Wisconsin. We truly do have a beautiful area for riding. So PLEASE be watching for bikes out in the coulee region also. "

Thank you for bringing this event to LaCrosse. It may not be everyone's 'cup-o-tea' but great exposure to the Coulee Region, causing great short and long term tourist revenue for the area. In perceived difficult economic times your organization of this major event is appreciated by any sensible resident. "

" A GOOD TIME should be had by ALL. It doesn't take much to keep the noise down (seems that this is the main reason of cancelled events) by not playing "ATTENTION GETTER" and riding responsibly with respect for the others that live here. There was alot of retoric on the noise during the Milwaukee Harley anniversary a few years ago, with many residents leaving town during the get together. LaConia New Hampshire is talking about getting rid of the yearly Harley Fest because of the noise that the residents can't stand. So let the bikers that are here make their own grave or many more fun times by their loud noise or NOT SO LOUD NOISE. I also am a bike rider, but with softer pipes. So no slam dunks about being against bikers. "JUST THE NOISE". "

You people need to deal with the fact that this is a bigger city, this isnt Stoddard or Genoa, where it is depressingly quiet. If the cops want to earn the respect of the public they wont be over zealous with there ticketing. most of the lud noise is going to occur in the business districts mostly away from homes..this is like the train argument all over again, just this time its AMERICAN MADE BIKES your whining about. Excessive noise is caused by narcissistic, irresponsible, thoughtless idiots. I am all for ticketing anyone, any time, anywhere in the city when they violate the noise ordinances. Pickups, old beaters, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, barking dogs, even motorcycles. It has been shown that noise in a city is a cause of depression, anxiety, hypertension, learning disabilities, and crime. The EPA has classified noise as a pollutant, and a health risk. It is hardest on the elderly, who sleep more lightly and have more trouble getting back to sleep, and children, who respond to stress by acting out. "
