Pauline Marie Constalie
WESTBY, Wis. — Pauline Marie Constalie, 88, of Westby, died suddenly at her home Sunday, June 22, 2008, surrounded by her family.

Pauline was born June 1, 1920, to Ingvald and Anna Oium. She grew up on a farm in Timber Coulee, Wis. Pauline was united in marriage to Stanley Constalie, who passed away in 1978.

Pauline was a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church; she was also an enthusiastic member of the Sons of Norway. There was no time more precious to Pauline than when she was with her beloved family. She cherished these get-togethers with her whole heart.

She will be sadly missed by her son, Fred (Mary) Constalie; grandson, Robert (Ingrid) Constalie, and their children, Kyle and Kate; granddaughter, Jenny (Mark) Luebke and their children, Erik and Elsa; her nieces, Paula Ebert and Annette Easterday; nephews, Mark Oium and Scott Meyer; brothers-innlaw, Arnold Meyer and Rand Constalie; sister-in-law, Donna Oium; along with many other relatives and friends.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley; two sisters, Orella Allen and Beverly Meyer; and one brother, Paul Oium.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, June 25, at 1:30 p.m. at Skogdahlen Lutheran Church near Westby. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate. Family and friends are invited for a visitation Wednesday, June 25, at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Albert ‘Al’ Duve Jr.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — Albert “Al” Duve Jr., 82, of Prairie du Chien died Friday, June 20, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Prairie du Chien. Burial, with military rites, will be in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garrity Funeral Home, Prairie du Chien, with a rosary service at 4:15 p.m., an Eagles tribute at 7 p.m., and wake Scripture services at 7:30 p.m.

Mary Kathleen Garvey

GAYS MILLS, Wis. — Mary K. Garvey, 92, of Gays Mills died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home, Soldiers Grove, Wis., surrounded by her family.

She was born June 9, 1916, near Gays Mills, the daughter of William and Bertha (Kelly) Wiser. She married Raymond F. Garvey on Oct. 15, 1937, in Gays Mills. Mary had been a Gays Mills resident her entire life. She was employed as the head cook and janitor at the Gays Mills Schools for 35 years. She also enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and wrapping silverwear and watching Packers games at Michaels Pub in Gays Mills.

She is survived by three daughters, Peggy (Mark) Lathrop of Soldiers Grove, Rosemary (Donald) Helgerson of rural Gays Mills, and Ervina (Greg) Thompson of West Allis, Wis.; and a son, Richard (Elaine) Garvey of Ocono-mowoc, Wis.; she will be sadly missed by all, 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; her parents; her brothers, Patrick and Michael; a sister, Rose; and a grandson, Tommy Thompson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Gays Mills. The Rev. Robert M. Chukwu will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gays Mills. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a 4:30 p.m. rosary, all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be given to the family; Vernon Memorial Hospital Hospice House Project; or St. Mary’s Parish, Gays Mills. Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills, is serving the family.

Irene Giertych

HOLMEN, Wis. — Irene Giertych, 80, of Holmen died suddenly in her home of natural causes on Saturday, June 21, 2008.

She was born Feb. 18, 1928, to Agnes and Robert Tolene in Minong, Wis. She dearly loved her husband and was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother, daughter, sister, grandma, niece and friend. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edward; 10 children, Florence Palmer, Steven (Lonnie) Giertych, Louis (Karen) Giertych, Mary Jostad, Theresa (Tom) Dallman, Robert (Ruth) Giertych, Ruth (Rex) Schermerhorn, Paul (Laurie) Giertych, Sonia (Jeff) Mashak and Joan (Allen) Mock; 39 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Walter, Paul and Leonard Tolene; three sons, Peter, Phillip and David Giertych; and one great-grandson, Phillip Bosworth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, 21077 Quarry Hill Road, in Winona, Minn. Burial will be in Greenmound Cemetery, rural Holmen. Friends may call at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen, on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

James Walter Girvin

James Walter Girvin, 95, of La Crosse died at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home on Monday, June 23, 2008.

He was born in Peoria, Ill., on July 8, 1912, to Walter B.A. and Elizabeth (Reay) Girvin. He served in the United States Coast Guard during WW II. He married Lottie Ethel Allison in East Peoria, Ill., on Sept. 10, 1939. Jim was employed at the Bemis Co. in Peoria as a commercial artist and assistant plant manager until his retirement in 1977.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Janice Robinson of La Crosse; three grandchildren, Leanna Sweetland, Wesley Sweetland and Ross Robinson; a great-granddaughter, Emma Sweetland; and a special family friend, Jim Fahey. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bernadine Girvin Gross. There will be no local services, and burial will be in the Fond du Lac Cemetery in East Peoria. Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family, La Crosse.

Patrick ‘Pat’ D. Graham

TOMAH, Wis. — Patrick “Pat” D. Graham, 64, of Tomah died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

He was born June 6, 1944, to Francis and Theressa (Snyder) Graham in Tomah. He was united in marriage to Patricia Sonnenburg on July 8, 1967, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Tomah. He was a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post 201 of Tomah. He worked for Clark Oil Co., Kwik Trip Inc., and later for Oil Equipment as a maintenance and installation manager. Pat was known as “everyone’s handyman.” He was always willing to give a helping hand when something needed to be fixed, repaired or replaced. He took great pride in helping his daughter and son-in-law build their home.

He was a loving grandfather and enjoyed spending time taking the grandkids to their school activities, ball games, track meets and music events. He also enjoyed the trips to the horse races with his sisters, spending his summers camping with friends and family, volunteering at the ACT theatre and many afternoons he could be found helping out at Don’s Auto. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patty; a daughter, Rhonda (Brad) Culpitt of Tomah; a son, Robert of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren, Tayler, Shelby and Wyatt Westpfahl, all of Tomah; four brothers, Francis “Jigger” (Patricia) Graham of McGregor, Texas, Lawrence (Helen) of Montclair, N.J., Robert (Donna) of Rockford, Ill., and Michael (Jean) Graham of Wilmington, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Jansen of Racine Wis., and Ellen Graham-Knight of Tomah; six sisters-in-law, Dorla (Miles) Guthrie and Lonna Gamerdinger, both of Tomah, Betty Phillips of Hartford, Wis., Carolyn (Rick) Abel of Sullivan, Wis., and Brenda Sonnenburg and Merece (Tom) Mueller, both of Milwaukee; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Maxine Krenn; a brother, Duane; three brothers-in-law, Ralph Jansen, Edward Krenn and Robert Sonnenburg; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Sonnenburg; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Ruth Sonnenburg.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 525 Superior Ave., Tomah. Pastor Donald R. Buch will officiate. Burial, with military rites by Grassman-Sowle-Larsen-Senz American Legion Post 201, will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah, on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Paul J. Grulkowski

ARCADIA, Wis. — Paul J. Grulkowski, 91, of Arcadia died Monday, June 23, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center, Arcadia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Parish, with burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, both in Arcadia. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. There will be a rosary at 9:30 a.m. Memorials are preferred to “Family Wishes.” Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, is assisting the family. Marguerite L. Meyer

LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Marguerite L. Meyer, 89, of La Crescent died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Rochester (Minn.) Methodist Hospital.

She was born in La Crosse on May 9, 1919, to Elmer and Martha (Trapp) Remp. She married George Meyer on Sept. 11, 1948, and he preceded her in death in 1979. Marguerite had worked for most of her life as a registered nurse, dedicating her life to the service and care of others. She was the first school nurse to be hired in the La Crescent School District and was the first woman to serve on the Houston County, Minn., board completing two terms in office. She was an active charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent, and in later years, she used her phone nursing ministry to reach out and care for those in need. Her attitude and love of life set an example for others even in the face of her own illness. Above all, her love of family and friends and the time she spent with them was paramount.

She is survived by one daughter, Paula (Steven) Bursley of Pleasanton, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Rachel and Nicholas, both of California. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Fred Meyer in 2007; one sister, Dorothy; and one brother, Robert.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Duane Baardseth will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent is assisting the family.

Aleda Nordlie

CASHTON, Wis. — Aleda Nordlie, 84, of Cashton died Monday, June 23, 2008, at Bethel Nursing Home, Viroqua, Wis. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church near Cashton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Torkelson Funeral Home, Cashton, and 12:30 p.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. Angelo “Lolo” Nakel Poppe, 6, of La Crosse died Sunday, June 22, 2008, after a tragic accident in his home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home. Ruth A. “Deedee” Raitzer, 88, of La Crosse and formerly of Coon Valley, Wis., died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Bethany Riverside Nursing Facility, La Crosse.
