Obama’s decision to reject public financing was disappointing

.
The most exciting aspects of Barack Obama’s campaign are the idealism of his message (which has appealed to millions of young people) and the notion that he is different from most politicians.

Unfortunately, his decision to reject public financing and continue his wildly successful Internet fundraising effort calls into question both of those qualities.
The Illinois Democrat has said the public financing system enacted in the wake of the Watergate scandals of the 1970s is “broken,” and that he needs to raise much more money to combat the expected Republican independently-financed smear campaign.

It’s not that John McCain, the Republican candidate, has entirely clean hands on this issue. While McCain has accepted public financing, which will limit the amount of money he can spend to $84.1 million in the general election, he is expected to benefit from Republican-financed independent ads.

That’s potentially hypocritical because he was tormented in his 2000 primary campaign against George W. Bush by the same smear merchants he now will benefit from in his effort to defeat Obama.

But that doesn’t justify Obama’s decision to become the first presidential candidate to reject public financing and the spending limits that go along with it.

Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, who has worked very hard to reform campaign finance laws, said of Obama’s rejection of public financing, “This is not a good decision. While the current public financing system for the presidential primaries is broken, the system for the general election is not. The entire system must be updated.”

Common Cause, a national reform group, issued a statement that said, “Sen. Obama did say at one point that he would opt into the system if his opponent did the same, and for that he gets a demerit.”

Obama’s decision is a disappointment.

" Got news for you. The war we are in is the UN's fault when they allowed the Jews to occupy 'their' land without fairly compensating the Arabs and others that lived there. Bush NEVER said the struggle would be easy or that it is over. Mission Accomplished was in regard to ridding the world of the BIGGEST environmental Criminal in HISTORY! The UN and Annan with the BRIBES to OUR ALLIES by the butcher Saddam, is the ONLY reason the UN whimped out. We should have ousted Saddam years earlier! Further, gas would be $10 if the axis of evil had their way and we would have had further attacks on OUR soil with STRENGTH and Resolve. On July 4th remember a VET so you can rant and rave your treason all you want! "

" Isn't it funny that someone who thinks he has "common sense" fails to show any when it comes to Bush and his mishandling of Iraq or the "war on terror". When you can't see a fool for what he is, you look through your rose colored glasses (especially if you watch FoxNews) and ignore the facts. Once you do this, you make up things and repeat them often enough until you convince others that they are the facts. Then you employ the Rove smear approach. However, this time liberals are standing up by ramming this mess back at those in charge, the Bush Republican Guard Party. Kind votes for Iraq funding because he wants to make certain he did his best to fully support our troops by not abandoning them. Its time to bring them home and require Iraqis to defend themselves. "

" Using wiseup's own words, then the biggest liar is Bush himself. He can't really tell when a mission is accomplished. He can't simply read a report informing him of an impending attack. Record oil profits with taxpayers money as well. Bush even promised to restore integrity to the White House. Another failed promise. Bush is a liar and bilked many Americans into believing him. I didn't and never will. I don't need to use CNN to see the truth; Bush's failures to act demonstrate he can't be trusted with the truth because he acts above the law. "

" anendtosocialism, isn't it comical how these panty waist libs sit in their nice safe comfortable homes watching CNN and think they can tell YOU what is going on in Iraq? "

blogger wrote on Jun 25, 2008 6:40 AM:

" endtosocialism - you have been to Iraq twice (are we to assume as part of the war?) and loved it? That is disturbing but you are free to your opinion. As for the "if you havent been there you dont have an opinion" tripe - this isnt a repressive dictatorship wherein everyone is entitled to agree with the leadership and dissenters dont exist. Remember, the current explanation for our presence in Iraq is to instill democracy and freedom (so the party line goes) - that applies here also. "

" Dear "anenedtosocialism" Bush is lowest class loser we've ever had in office and he will face War Criminal charges when he finally leaves office. Of course no one can stop you from fawning over such a failed man, that's why our troops are dying....for your right to support an idiot like Bush. "

BrianGSmith wrote on Jun 25, 2008 2:09 AM:

" Obama would be judged a fool if he passed up the possibilty of having $300 million for the Campaign instead of $84 million. If the shoe was on the other foot we'd hear free market arguments, etc..... Obama is not using Taxpayer money like McCain will....I sense a lot of bitterness on the right. They've been exposed over the past 7 years as being absolutely liars and erroneous on all major issues facing the USA. Bush's ratings hover near the drinking age and 84% of Americans say we're on the wrong road. "

" You liberals on here never cease to amaze me. Its the same old rant every day with you; Iraq is an illeagal war, Bush is an idiot, Bush didn't stop hurricane Katrina, Bush is just lining the oil companies pockets, ect... As for the Iraq war, unless you've been there don't say anything. I've been fortunate enough to go twice and I loved it. Don't take too much stock in everything you see on CNN (the Communist News Network), who try to vilify the military and make it look like we're losing the war. As for Bush, you have to give him credit. As much as the left bashes him and resorts to name calling, you never see him stoop to that level and personally attack the liberals. That shows class which is lot more than most of you show. "

" blogger, just for the record. if something is the truth, it can't be called a smear. but as usual some have a hard time staying on subject. the subect, or editorial, was about Obama. and he is the same old same old politician, one will do or say whatever it takes to get votes. if this was editorial about McCain, i'd be saying he is the same old same old also. "

blogger wrote on Jun 24, 2008 9:02 PM:

" More of the same old same old would be McCain (90 -100 % voting record in the Senate going along with Dear Leader). Pretty tough to tell them apart, in spite of the Tough Talk Express spin. As for smear merchants Common Sense, Karl Rove and Swift Boaters wrote the book and Rove continues to work his magic even though he isnt currently playing puppet master for Bush a la Charlie McCarthy. As for moving closer to the middle, at least he recognizes that one exists - that "the party" does not start and end with prostituting himself to the extreme right. "

" Ha ha! Yup, all you libs that think you have found your savior, just watch as Obama moves ever closer to the middle as the election approaches. Don't get too excited about him, as many people will start really thinking about their vote when push comes to shove, and your guy will probably end up back where he came from, in the senate. But then maybe he can build some sort of record that people can look at and actually have some idea what he might REALLY do if he were to become president, contrary to the present situation. Even if he were elected, he would need the support of the conservative dems and some republicans to get anything done. You look at him and the fireworks start going off, simply because he isn't a republican. How dumb can you be!? Hillary would have been better than him! "

LAX wrote on Jun 24, 2008 12:51 PM:

" And why doesn't the Trib report on how Ron Kind voted to continue funding the Iraq war? Time for Kind to leave right along with Bush...He is definitely NOT doing a heck of a job representing the folks of Western Wisconsin. Pathetic! Folks should write to the Wisconsin Democratic Party headquarters and lodge a strong protest! Kind no longer deserves Democratic support. "

" I voted for Obama in the primary and am feeling very let down. Not just this issue but others show he is just another politician and an inexperienced one surrounded by American haters at that. As an independent, conservative I don't really have a candidate and Bob Barr is looking better every day. "

" This paper's nitpicking at Obama while McCain gets a free pass is frustrating. We get these kinds of articles about Obama, but only articles about McCain's bowling scores and what TV programs he likes. It's fair to criticize Obama for this decision, but get over your schoolgirl crush on McCain. How about an exploration of his undeserved reputation as a campaign finance reformer when his campaign staff is made up of former lobbyists? "

blogger wrote on Jun 24, 2008 9:08 AM:

" It all boils down to what kind of non-taxpayer support you approve of. We are fixated on the totals - how many millions Obama will now have vs McCain. But as BGS pointed out it DOES make a difference that Obama can generate his money from a large number of contributers sending modest amounts, vs large corporation largess. Which is a more democratic (note: small d) process? Until public financing is the only legal way to fund campaigns (I can hear the special intersts and corporations complaining already) $$$ = free speech. Whose $ is the issue. "

LAX wrote on Jun 24, 2008 8:49 AM:

" Dear Common Sense: Shall we now talk about the Republican lies that got us into the illegal, immoral war, how a budget surplus turned into record national debt, how Bush/Cheney's Saudi and American oil pals are raking in record profits, the outing of CIA agents, Katrina, etc., etc. And then let's talk about all the PAC money McBush is taking. If I were you, I'd keep my mouth shut about "smear." The only rules you Republiscums abide by are the ones you make up while ignoring all others including the Constitution... "

BrianGSmith wrote on Jun 24, 2008 8:20 AM:

" Dear "Common Sense"....Moveon.org disbanded after Obama's suggestion that no "527's" be used on the "left". Keep up to speed. As for "rules"....you're not suggesting the Republicans are honorable rule followers, are you? Obama didn't break any rules....he simply changed his mind as the "terrain" changed. It's a sign of intelligence. Obama's campaign is being funded by millions of common folk giving donations averaging less than $100.00. He will not be beholden to major corporations. It's the kind of system many like. "

Common Sense wrote on Jun 24, 2008 6:52 AM:

" Hey Trib, let's not forget the biggest "smear merchant" of all, Moveon.org, which will be doing all the smearing, distorting, and brainwashing it can to help Obama. As for Obama, he's a democrat; therefore, we all know he is not required to abide by rules or promises he/they have made for themselves. This is nothing more than I would have expected. "
