Unfortunately things have changed slightly. I am a teacher. School ended three weeks ago. In those three weeks I have attended two multiple day conferences, finished planning the schedules for the majority of my students (which required me to be at school roughly 4-5 hours per day), and written four papers for the class I am taking to renew my license (i.e. keep my job). Sounds like a glorious vacation doesn't it? "

" There are many problems with NCLB, from the fact it is an unfunded mandate to the fact it causes some schools to overemphasize reading and math instruction to the detriment of other subjects. However, I have seen the negative effects when an administration has a "no-retention" policy and students figure out they will keep getting passed no matter how little they learn or do. Then parents figure out not only with their children pass, but they will get inflated grades as well, if they put enough pressure on teachers and administrators. I have to hope that as painful as it might be, NCLB might put the brakes on some of the rampant social promotion and grade inflation that occurs. "

As a mother of a teacher, I can also attest to their long, unpaid hours. Even when my daughter goes home after 10+ hours, she is continuously up late working on something for school. I am shocked to see receipts every year as she spends well over $1,000 of her own money in her classroom. The most remarkable part is that she thinks nothing of it,and loves going to work every day. Yes, Katie you are so right. The long hours and the extra duties some districts require of a teacher. None of the teachers I know puts in any less than a ten hour day.
I feel so sad for any teacher when I hear comments about the huge pay and lack of work.
In just about every district if anyone is "overpaid" it would be the administration. Now that the economy is wildly out of control, maybe even their wages shouldn't be thought of as out of line. "

Teachers shape future generations. It's not in any way an easy job and jerks like you certainly don't help ANYONE. The smaller districts will have more and more of these scores as parents are allowed to throw temper tantrums insisting their childs slow and or no progress is the teachers fault. Lets ignore the fact that the child wont do the work, turns it in late.
