Motorcycle madness rolls into town for S&S Cylce's 50th anniversary

.
Bill and Arlene Sowle rolled into Rudy’s Drive-in Thursday on their Harley-Davidson Heritage, sporting jean jackets covered in patches from motorcycle rallies across the country.

They had traveled about 400 miles from their rural Springfield, Ill., farm to celebrate 50 years of S&S Cycle, the company that makes high-performance motorcycle engines and parts at its facilities in La Crosse and Viola, Wis.

“We’ve done business with them for a long time,” said Bill.

Bill said he began buying S&S parts about 40 years ago, when he was racing Harleys with a friend.

“We broke the world drag racing record about 40 years ago with the help of Harley and S&S,” he said.

Although the S&S anniversary celebration officially starts today, Rudy’s kicked off the weekend Thursday with American Graffiti Night, referring to the 1970s movie “American Graffiti.”

The event, like the movie, featured classic cars, but motorcyclists participating in the weekend’s S&S gathering were welcome to show off their machines, too. The event also honored the 75th anniversary of Rudy’s, said owner Gary Rudy.

Sue Tuma, of Cashton, Wis., was standing in Rudy’s parking lot amid a sea of cycles. Just the sound of motorcycles rumbling was enough for her.

“I like the loud pipes, just the sound of the power,” she said. “You can feel it in your chest.”

Steve Thesing, of Stoddard, Wis., was looking forward to the weekend’s events.

“We want to take it all in,” he said, referring to his wife and father-in-law accompanying him. “I want to see the bikes, the vendors, the artwork, everything.”

Howard Kelly, a spokesperson for S&S Cycle, said the most amazing part of the event is the motorcycle builders who have come from around the world with machines they built using S&S’s 50th anniversary engines.

Kelly gave crowds of people tours of the S&S Cycle facility Thursday but said he has no idea how many motorcyclists might come to La Crosse for the event.

That may depend on the weather.

Intermittent showers and thunderstorms are likely throughout today until evening, said Brad Adams, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse.

The rest of the weekend is expected to be drier, with a 50 percent chance of rain Saturday and a 40 percent chance Sunday, said Adams.

" Look around you Mayor Skippy, look at the students, look at the young, and yes look at the rest of the populas. Take your sweater off from around your neck and open your eyes. Jesse James the musician? What a bunch of Boneheads. "

" Posters on the other thread placed this celebration is prospective. It will bring in far more than the State Track Meet, much quieter than the Airshow, we did not have to bestow $15.9 million in 27 year TIFs, no free 800 parking spaces, no 'spot re-zoning, no satellite parking, UWL did not have to 'give' the project a castaway from the system employment roles, no one-of-a-kind $1.00 riverfront parcel, no Reverse TIF in sight, and far more added local jobs than Riverside Center II. Even though they might not fit with the Mayors statement on Mitch Reynolds Show interview recently, "we are trying to attract the 'right' kind of clientele downtown". As they have tattoo parlors on their prohibited list for certain areas. "

" Hey, mytwocents, you're a little confused. You got the wrong Jesse James. Sandra Bullock is not married to Jesse James Dupree, the singer in Jackyl. She's married to the bike builder. "

" At least the bikers in town have a hobby other than sitting on trib.com and complaining about everything that goes on in this town!!

And to their credit, I've had nothing but good encounters so far this weekend. "

" Get a grip....sightings ....Kid Rock (who cares)? Jay Leno, and Sandra Bullok (her husbands band plays tomorrow nite) Great for our area. Lovely little comments here. Rock On! "

Just Some Dude wrote on Jun 27, 2008 9:28 PM:

" BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I love these whiners......they walk around bitching about everything like their opinion matters. Guess the event is going on even though you are against it.........now tell me, how much does your worthless opinion matter?

That's right not at all. Keep on preaching and whining, our pipes are so loud we can't hear you anyways.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I hope your Geo Metro isn't too noisy for you "

" "Motorcycle madness"? Seems to be on the same path as the Mayors statement. That City leaders hope that the cultivate the "right Clientele". I find it truly amazing, as the City has literally mentioned Tattoo parlors on their short list of unpalatable businesses. S&S has brought in more new to the area jobs than Riverside Center II, and is a sure bet more profitable than the Resturaunt that skips across the bottom line. Parents watch your children this weekend because tatted and pierced people will abound. Wait a minute, like the very same children around you on a day-to-day basis. Never mind! "

" Hey Nathan,
WOW you are a cry baby. You should close your windows anyway, it is too hot and humid to have them open. Do us all a favor and just don't post if you are only going to whine. You are such a flap. "

wisconsingal wrote on Jun 27, 2008 7:27 PM:

" I'm not into bikes/bikers either...but to each his own. The only business owners I see profitting from this event are the bar owners and the tattoo parlors. The cops will be out in full force to keep a watchful eye and every doctor in the LaCrosse area will be on-call at the area hospitals. I don't get it either, but those that do, have a great weekend. Just stay out of trouble (if possible!) "

" Splish Splash...At least the rain will clean some of these people up...even if it is at the cost of our ear drums. "

Opus wrote on Jun 27, 2008 7:05 PM:

" This is an awsome event. The pipes on motorcycles are no louder than the jets flying into LAX international, The trains blowing their whistles at all hours of the night, and the semi's on the highway engine breaking. So all you loosers who spend most of their on the net or at the library, leave us alone and stay in your hole. "

ic2020 wrote on Jun 27, 2008 5:55 PM:

" omg! You people who have nothing better to do than complain about this even make me ill. I am not into bikes but actually I am very excited about this. Everyone in this town always complains about nothing to do, and our economy being terrible. Think of what this event is doing for our local business owners. Personally, I am just going crazy about having a chance to get a glimpse of Paul Jr.! If you don't like it... stay home, order in, and shut your windows. Let the rest of the town enjoy an event that is a once in a lifetime occurance! "

Nathan wrote on Jun 27, 2008 5:24 PM:

" Thank you hillbilly I agree. I can't wait to have to close my windows due to the noise pollution this will cause. However I could be ticketed due to a loose muffler. But yet these people can weave in and out of traffic and lay on the throttle and vibrate my windows. Double standard???? Oh I guess not, it's "OK" because LAX is gonna make money of this. WTF ever. And oh by the way any of you that are going to try and berate my comment, you can kiss my you know what. Its down right rude. "

Hillbilly wrote on Jun 27, 2008 4:47 PM:

" It seems just bizarre that a community can cheer about an event which is based on a mass violation of the law. Yes, I guess i just don't get it . . . "
