Under the direction of head coach Lee Hein, the 14-girl roster has built a 16-4 record so far this summer.
Last weekend the WinStars outscored their opponents 68-4 at their home tournament. On top of their impressive start to the summer, the team has already secured an automatic bid into this year’s state tournament, thanks to its third-place finish last year.
The Stars of Tomorrow Tournament, although only one of many stops for the WinStars, is no less important.
“The Stars of Tomorrow has such a history of putting on a good tournament,” Hein said. “The folks that run it do a great job. They’re always on time and the umpiring is good. It’s an excellent tournament that brings in good quality teams.”
And the WinStars are only one such group. Most of the team has experience at the national level — five girls
competed in the 14B national tournament last year while another six did so in the 12A division.
Rather than aiming to meet individual interests, the WinStars focus on making the best decision to succeed as a whole, and Hein believes that’s one reason why the WinStars continue to find success.
“It’s not about who’s a pitcher or who plays shortstop. It’s about what’s best for the team,” Hein said.
The sense of team which the WinStars emphasize materializes itself in each game, and they don’t plan to change anything as they travel to La Crosse this weekend.
“We play ball with grace. We’re not talking to the other dugout. We play with our heads down, eyes to the ground, hard-ball aggressive. We let our
play really speak how we want to conduct ourselves,” Hein said.
