At S&S Cycle celebration, motorcycles more than just a ride

.
While La Crosse residents now are acquainted with the growling engines and leather jackets of motorcycle culture, bikers attending S&S Cycle’s 50th anniversary celebration talked Friday about more than noise and testosterone.

“It’s a Zen thing for me,” said Alex Quinones, 43. “When your hair is blowing in the wind and there’s only road in front of you, I’m at peace then. I’m with God then.”

Quinones, a La Crosse resident, was viewing the 50 custom-built motorcycles on display Friday afternoon under a tent at the Oktoberfest grounds. The motorcycle judged to be the best will win its builder $50,000. The winner will be announced Sunday.

Behind Quinones, a motorcycle built by Church of Choppers was on display.

While motorcycles are religion for some, those like Vince Doll, 51, from South Carolina, see them as art.

“Why does a guy paint a picture? Why does a guy sit there for hours with a camera?” said Doll, looking at the motorcycle he built and dubbed “Simple.” “It’s my idea of artwork.”

A Friday afternoon downpour briefly flooded parts of the Oktoberfest grounds during the event, bringing water ankle-high under one corner of the main tent before receding.

An announcement over a loudspeaker advised those parked on Front Street to move their motorcycles due to flooding there.

Rain also forced cancellation of a Friday morning ride to the S&S facility in Viola, Wis.

But even with the rain, motorcycle enthusiasts packed the Oktoberfest grounds, and motorcycles lined the streets.

Ticket agents estimated 3,500 wristbands had been sold by 3:30 p.m.

People had come for the event from as far away as Japan, Italy, Australia and Germany, said Howard Kelly, a spokesman for S&S, which makes high-performance engine parts and engines for motorcycles.

A motorcycle by Australia’s Branko Built Motorcycles included depictions of S&S’s founders.

Tom Holmberg, who called S&S an “icon of the industry,” rode his Harley along with three friends to La Crosse from Grant Park, about 60 miles south of Chicago.

He said he has traveled through La Crosse on his way back from Sturgis, a motorcycle rally in South Dakota, and enjoys the scenic rides here, especially down the Great River Road.

“It’s all an icon of our American way of life,” Holmberg said, scanning the tent. “We’re a mobile society, maybe more than any other country. And we love our vehicles, even with the price of gas as high as it is.”

" Who pays for all the extra police escorts, traffic control, setting up no parking signs, extra work hours? When Bush was in town they made the Republicans pay, why should this be any different? Shouldn't the $5 dollar a head ticket go to the city of La Crosse? Shouldn't all the businesses that benefited from this event financially contribute to the cost that will be placed on ordinary La Crosse resident that the majority of will not benefit from this event, nor give a hoot about motorcycles. Bikers are amazingly generous folks who are kind, considerate, and not to metion (most are) wealthy. They might bring some life to this frumpy old town. Not to metion the millios of dollars they will bring to our economy, or are you waiting for Barrack Obama to do that for you. Use your brain for once. "

I also heard Ted Nugent and Sheryl Crow were here-but the person who told me that, I don't know that well. So I don't know if it was true or not. Impressive show of bikes I saw, though. "

" The daily bird-cage liner had an advertising supplement today; ads included breweries, taverns, tatoo parlors, and a gun shop.

Does that tell you anything about what kind of people who ride motor-cycles?

I know/knew, or am/was related to, several motorheads; two of them died in crashes with larger vehicles.

In some counties, the hides of heavily tatooed individuals are removed at death, and tanned, then put on display in museums. Provided, of couse, that there is still some left, after sliding a block or two down an abrasive street.

So, they can be annoying dead or alive, I guess "

" There is alot of crazy rumors on celebrities being in town. As someone that has been at and around the festival since it started I have not personally seen one of the many celebs that are "in town" or do I know anyone who has. I think it La Crosse's imagination running wild again. No wonder people in this town think there is some boogeyman serial killer here!! Sorry folks..I think Jackyl is as big of a celeb as you are going to see. Thats not saying much.... "

But other than the OCC gang I haven't seen or read anything in our "news media" about big name celebs. I guess there must have been a more important "cat stuck in tree" story that distracted the newsrooms of LaCrosse. "

With the economy being the way it is, it's amazing that any kind of event can attract people at all. From the way it sounds, S&S has done a wonderful job of pulling people, and their tourist dollars, to La Crosse. So I say "Welcome to La Crosse!" "
