Visiting bikers get to know Coulee Region

.
After David Anthony explained to an admirer the pictures on his motorcycle — including Hillary Clinton being strangled by an oil derrick and Barack Obama transforming into Hitler — the woman asked how he liked La Crosse.

“I love La Crosse!” said Anthony, a San Diego resident on his first visit here for S&S Cycle’s 50th anniversary celebration.

His motorcycle is one of 50 custom-built bikes from around the world on display under a tent at the South Side Oktoberfest grounds. The motorcycle judged best today will win its builder $50,000.

This weekend’s event is unique in the history of La Crosse, drawing bikers here from around the upper Midwest and elsewhere in the world — many for the first time.

Anthony, who said he enjoyed the coffee at Peaberry’s Coffeehouse and Cafe, said people here seem to appreciate this community and said that’s much different from San Diego, which he described as rough, competitive and back-stabbing.

Sean Tate, 35, from Sydney, Australia, has been to Yesterdays bar, taken a Mississippi River tour on the La Crosse Queen and ridden to Viola, Wis., since arriving in La Crosse as part of a cross-country motorcycle tour.

A friend of the owner of Branko Built Motorcycles, which has a motorcycle in the competition, Tate said, there’s more variety in the biking community in this country than in Australia, where he said bikers are more “hard core.”

“Here, you don’t have the image you have to uphold, and you don’t have people looking down on you like you’re some kind of scum because you ride a Harley,” said Tate, sitting on his Harley-Davidson Road King with a full-sized Australian flag flying on back.

About 10,000 wristbands to enter the festgrounds had been sold by 4 p.m. Saturday, said Howard Kelly, a spokesman for S&S. That brought the two-day total to more than than 20,000, he said.

In the build-off competition, 60 percent of the score will come from fellow builders’ judging, 20 percent will come from sponsors and key S&S employees, 15 percent will come from public voting and 5 percent from Internet voting, said Michael Scaletta, director of business development for S&S, which makes high-performance motorcycle engines and parts at its facilities in La Crosse and Viola, Wis.

While bikers from around the world and country have come for the event, the majority of license plates on the rows of motorcycles parked on 2nd Street were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Jim and Karen Cornwell live in Aransas Pass, Texas, but spend summers in Wisconsin to be near family.

The couple, who used to live in Tomah, are both active with Patriot Guard Riders, a motorcycle group that escorts soldiers to airports, welcomes them home from war, participates in their funerals and shields them from protesters.

Jim, 68, said biking in this region is much prettier than in Texas.

“Texas is flat,” he said. “This is some of the most beautiful riding there is.”

Local residents also came out to see the motorcycles.

Ben Fletcher, 27, who was born and raised in La Crosse, said the event is one of the coolest things that’s ever happened here.

“We don’t get to see things like this in La Crosse a lot,” he said. “For 50 of the best bike-builders in the world to come here, I just can’t believe it.”

" I just gotta wonder how many of these loudpipe complainers own a boat and pollute the water while anoying the people fishing from shore or even those on boats with their disregardfull wakes? Ya'all want to complain about bike noise thats pumping millions into your local economy while congesting the water ways with your luxury crafts. Well at least the bikers arent dumping fuel and oil and litter in our waterways now are they? "

" I enjoyed the artistic aspect of this, and was downtown a number of times checking out the cycles, I'm not 100% negative on this topic. My only beef is people that don't show respect to the community.

Yes, they brought a lot of money, thats nice ... but there is always room to improve any function.

I'm not always negative, but only usually post when something ticks me off is all, so, you get what you get. Every post of mine starts with my name, if you don't like my comments, skip my posts, problem solved. "

wow, did I tick someone off? LOL

Did I hit a nerve? GREAT! Got my point across.

Grow some thicker skin, or put some leather on ... get a tissue and chill.

Have a nice day. "

" THANK YOU S & S. In this time of economic difficulty for many companies its a blessing for an event like this to bring millions to the area. I had a chance to speak with some builders and vendors. The would love to come back every year. They said alot of places they go in the country wants the money but not them, places like Sturgis and Daytona. Lets not be like them. They said talk to you city and tell them you want us back. I was there every night and the crowd was wonderful. Not stupid like Oktoberfest drunk crowds. Bikers are great people and there is very seldom trouble "

" Mack -- it is about time for you to muffle your mind, your mouth, your fingers, and your computer,
and... much earlier today you said you need to hear to be a defensive driver, ?? blind people don't drive but deaf people do. You get a eye test at the dmv not a hearing test.
Just had another thought perhaps everything to you is noise, you want to be the only one heard. "

Mack wrote on Jun 29, 2008 11:08 PM:

" It would be too bad if the role players with the loud mufflers spoiled it for everybody. "

joeemt wrote on Jun 29, 2008 10:22 PM:

" I hope the bikers are back next year and more than ever. If those that I had contact with are any indication of the riders, their are more than welcome. It seems there is more trouble with the college students than with the bikers. Kudos to S&S for a fine job with the event and an outstanding product. Keep up the good work S&S. No I am not a biker, but now thinking of buying a bike "

" I would like to thank S&S Cycle and Oktoberfest for providing a great venue to community organizations to raise some money. I was in attendance all 3 days (day and night) and the people who were at the celebration were some of the best behaved people I have ever had the opportunity to be around. Many said they would be back because they really liked our community and were impressed with how nice people here were and with how beautiful it is here. "

catmom wrote on Jun 29, 2008 9:12 PM:

" The loud pipes are a small annoyance to the community. They are usually long gone before it really is disturbing.I agree that the impact on tourism for the area greatly outweighs the annoyance.Hope they tell their friends! Good luck to S&S for another 50 years!! "

" Soooooooooooooooooooo tired of all the negative BS around here. I hate to even come in here and read things any more.

This was a great event, with very little police involvement. Professional, respectful adults with a passion.

Kudos to all that attended...and a big HELL YEAH for an annual event!

Right on!! "

Mack wrote on Jun 29, 2008 7:51 PM:

" Clinging to loud exhausts is obviously very emotional for some. "

Mack wrote on Jun 29, 2008 7:50 PM:

" It can be an annual event with descent exhausts. If you want loud exhaust get one of those electronic devices will play it over your IPOD and you can turn it up as loud as you want. You can even get different exhaust tones. Most of the loud exhausts were not even on S&S engines. S&S makes some very good and well tuned exhaust systems. They are not the ones being complained about. "

120-inch-bagger wrote on Jun 29, 2008 6:05 PM:

" I give S&S, it's supporters, local businesses, and the community a big Congrats. Now the ball is in the LaCrosse and local communities court. Do you make this an annual event or not?

How can an event like this be any worse than Oktoberfest? C'mon people wake up!!!! You have what could be a great thing for the community and it's surronding communities. Please don't blow it. "

120-inch-bagger wrote on Jun 29, 2008 6:03 PM:

" My oh my what negativity. Do you know how much an event like this brings to local communities. I guess HonestAbe has no clue. Let's take a look at the Spring and Fall Floodruns. The communities and establishments have to put up with noise and the like but the returns out weigh the days noise. Some of these businesses make more money from these two events in two days of the year than they would without the events altogether for a full year.

We have some of the most beautiful and scenic scenery in the world for riding and everyone should be welcome to enjoy it. We are still free yet, aren't we? "

wiseup wrote on Jun 29, 2008 5:49 PM:

" If it is true, that over 100 citations were issued for loud pipes than this is what the Tribune is responsible for sharing with the community. All warm and fuzzy articles but the truth has to be cleared with the city before its printed? Unfortunately, they needed to pay the overtime and didn't have expected arrests so they Barney Fifed it and got out the book to throw it at our welcomed guests! Where they live, they don't get crappy tickets. Here they might get Gomer's famous CITIZEN's ARREST FOR NOISE ALTHOUGH THE BANDS PLAYED LOUDER! "

HonestAbe Is An Idiot wrote on Jun 29, 2008 5:35 PM:

" Who cares about Your worthless personal opinion, you post so much B.S. on here I'm surprised you don't already have a job at the Tribune.
Lets see, you're wrong sound does not just travel backwards from the tailpipes, it goes in all directions.

ABE's brilliant "use a horn" makes no sense either, what are you supposed to ride around with your horn going constantly???

You are wrong constantly, big deal if somebody wants loud pipes for Whatever reason safety, false sense of safety, or just to make themselves feel "cool", who are you to say otherwise???????
I'll answer....you are NOBODY, I repeat NOBODY, you are usually wrong and your opinion WORTHLESS.

Who the real one who is trying to be "cool" and feel important??????
That would be Honest Abe, and failing miserably at it, you are neither "cool" or important, more of an amusement/annoyance than anything. "

HonestAbe wrote on Jun 29, 2008 1:43 PM:

" Im Still Jackson, if you ride in the country at night on a bike, that's just crazy and you're asking for trouble with deer.

Make any argument you want, bottom line is you want people to look at you so you feel cool, period. "

Mack wrote on Jun 29, 2008 1:43 PM:

" If loud pipes save lives, Gold Wing and BMW riders must be dropping like flies. Actually the opposite is true, Gold Wings and BMW's have the best safety record and the lowest insurance premiums for comparably priced motorcycles. This worn out slogan was invented by after market exhaust mongers. "

HonestAbe wrote on Jun 29, 2008 1:39 PM:

" Im Still Jackson, when I had a cycle, I had 2 sets of air horns,,, and they worked fine.

Be honest ... lous bikes are usually those people that want attention, period, put whatever spin you want on it, its for attention, period.

The harleys etc that have the mellow pipes dont have more accidents .... its just that you want everyone to look at your dull existence, admit it. "

" After seeing what the people of this community have to say about the activities of this weekend it makes me ill. To see people complain about things as little as a paint job or even a lil noise that can and does save lives. if you stop thinking about your selfs for just a lil bit maybe you will see that this has brought many companys in the area lots of money and it even put lacrosse on the map to people that have never been here or heard of it or that have seen it on a map and said why go there nothing ever happens there any ways congrates S&S on 50 years and best wishes for another 500 LOW & LOUD FOREVER "

Exercise wrote on Jun 29, 2008 12:17 PM:

" TO: mom_at_home,

Thank you for having one of the only positive post here. I get so aggravated at the negativity & venomous comments many people post on these articles.

This is a LaCrosse news article/reporter so we don't expect quality. We're used to poor coverage of most news worthy stories and events by the local media, unless it's something promoting their news organization. (yes, that was my bit of negativity)

Again thanks to mom_at_home & those posters that see this event as nothing but a positive thing for LaCrosse. "

Hillbilly wrote on Jun 29, 2008 11:17 AM:

" What a joke! You people may think you are cool, but people laugh at you. Ape hangers especially, listen up! Then when you go by people are angry about your noise. It's not cool, its rude. And so are you. You give motorcyclists a bad name. You say, "loud pipes save lives." Oh yeah, well so do helmets! But do you ever see one of these self-centered, inconsiderate slobs wearing one? No, because it has absolutely nothing to do with saving lives, it is about calling attention to your insecure ego. You think you are making a fashion statement with your obligatory bandana, tattoos and beer belly, but it's just a not very original *non-conformist* uniform. "

elocs wrote on Jun 29, 2008 10:25 AM:

" I am disappointed in reporter Joe Orso, who is the Tribune's faith and religion reporter. This event must have hundreds of wonderful and uplifting stories, but he chose (it was his choice) to place at the start of his story about an admirer of a cycle that had a picture of Hillary Clinton being strangled by an oil derrick and Barack Obama transforming into Hitler. That is sad and I would hope in hindsight that he would think there was a much better way to begin his story. "

mom_at_home wrote on Jun 29, 2008 10:07 AM:

" Noise or not, this is an awesome event and a great opportunity to bring all kinds of people to the La Crosse area. Think of all the business that are profiting from this event. With the economy as it is, this is a great thing. After seeing the beauty & friendliness of the coulee region, maybe some of these worldly famous bikers & builders will come back and bring more people with them. This 50th anniversary celebration could be the start of a wonderful thing for the community. "

biker b!tch wrote on Jun 29, 2008 9:53 AM:

" Mack I must tell this story now, I was on 3rd watching people and traffic. At the lights was a car, then 5 cycles, and then a van, then a ambulance with the lights on quietly waiting. The other lane mostly bikes, moved left, the car moved forward and right, the bikes moved over to the right and turned to point at the ambulance for the van to get him to move right. The dumb a$$ still did not SEE the ambulance. Then the ambulance beeped the siren. It was amusing to see this guy jump out of his shorts and move over. Point is, noise is good, and defensive driving also includes SEEING. This guy did not see until there was noise. "

Im Still Jackson wrote on Jun 29, 2008 9:32 AM:

" Oh and Im sure the deer would stop running out in front of bikers too from the sound of a horn, NOT. Try a little experiment drive out in deerville with a loud vehicle and watch the deer raise their heads and then either freeze or runaway then try it in a quiet vehicle and your chances are pretty good you can hit a deer without them hearing you comming.
Loud pipes do save lives even the wildlife. "

Myturn wrote on Jun 29, 2008 9:30 AM:

" More new employees than Riverside Center II, greater revenue than the State Track Meet, quieter than than the UWL subsidized Air Show, far less expensive to tax payers than 27 year TIFs, no 800 guaranteed free parking spaces, no $1.00 one-of-a-kind downtown riverfront parcels, no imminent domain or threat, no private viwing boxes, no room tax, no rumors of a reverse TIF for expansion, no possibility of another building to proselytize tenants of pre-existing local businesses, and no $3.5k per new employee up to $875k with no itemized employee reports turned in. Seems to me it might be a private sector, profit making, without a government contract business. Can you just imagine that! "

Im Still Jackson wrote on Jun 29, 2008 9:26 AM:

" Aber: Silly me a horn why didnt I think about that? Well because then it would sound like all the 4 wheel vehicles I can see instead of that distictive roaring motorcycle trade mark that says "HEY 2 wheeler here"!Maybe they should put bull horns on them too! "

BigPhilly14 wrote on Jun 29, 2008 8:55 AM:

So, it helped in that situation, similar to A HORN? Wow.

Are you/they too busy with something else to hit the horn button, or isn't that cool?

get real "

Im Still Jackson wrote on Jun 29, 2008 1:32 AM:

" Abe your making yourself LOOK stupid in cyperspace.Loud pipes do save lives and if you ever been in heavy rush hour traffic with blind spots abound and heard one snort or rap it increased your awareness to its position by drawing attention to its sound causing drivers to scan their driving area ect. More than once I have went to change lanes in those driving conditions and once alerted to the rap was glad I heard it because I sure didnt see it hiding in my blind spot and the biker would had been run over. "

wakeup wrote on Jun 29, 2008 12:39 AM:

" "shields them from protestors"??!! Good grief! Many bikers are decent, normal people, but some are paranoid nuts living in some alternative universe where everyone's out to get them. I sure hope (and I'm quite sure) they ride without helmets. Nothing there to protect. "

HonestAbe wrote on Jun 29, 2008 12:32 AM:

" Ya Mack, I live right down by their activity and am sick of wearing earplugs ... I mean, cool its about the style, but why infringe on the community and your neighbors, man?

Loud pipes saves lives ... doubt it, the sound goes back, not forward. That's an excuse to have loud pipes to tell people "look at me".

I walked downtown today, very cool machines, but yes, how about when you have a gathering, muffle a bit and show the locals respect.

The race in riverside that just about ran me over was fun, didn't know I could still move that fast. If it was more low key I'd be all on board. "

HonestAbe wrote on Jun 29, 2008 12:29 AM:

" So, Dave Anthony, I guess we know who you're voting for, huh?

Why do you like McSame, do you like Bush? If so, why?

You make a convenient political statement, as you say it, but its biased. You talk freedom, yet promote your wants.

That bike looks like its been flipped 40 times too lol, good luck in the contest. "

Mack wrote on Jun 29, 2008 12:05 AM:

" LOUD PIPES = GET OVER YOURSELF. Really, any gas engine with a straight pipe is going to be loud. Try something original. Great event though, would make a nice annual event. "
