WHITEHALL, Wis. — Edward C. Anderson, 84, of Whitehall died Friday, June 27, 2008, at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home, Whitehall. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Whitehall, with burial in Bethel Cemetery, rural Independence, Wis. Vistation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and an hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.

Frederick J. Behrens

ONALASKA, Wis. — Frederick J. Behrens, 84, of Onalaska and formerly of Tomah, Wis., died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tomah. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah. Visitation will be 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church. Torkelson Funeral Home, Tomah is assisting the family.

Sandra L. Bey

Sandra L. Bey, 61, died in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Funeral services are tentative for Tuesday in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Onalaska, Wis. Burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Memorials preferred. Dickinson Family Funeral Home will provide a complete obituary in Monday’s La Crosse Tribune.

Gertrude ‘Gert’ M. Davidson

Gertrude “Gert” M. Davidson, 81, of rural Chaseburg, Wis., died Friday, June 27, 2008, at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, Wis. Gert was born Jan. 26, 1927, to William and Ethel (Hoilien) Hoff at the Gerhard and Mabel Thompson home in rural Westby. She was baptized in March 1927, by the Rev. Hyland and confirmed June 6, 1941, by the Rev. Bach at Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church. On Feb. 14, 1948, she married Leo Davidson.

She was a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as poppy chairperson for 20 years. Gert was a member of the Middle Coon Valley WELCA for 60 years. She helped with quilting and serving at church. Gert also worked as a helper preparing school lunches with Westby Area Schools in Chaseburg and Coon Valley for several years.

Survivors are her husband, Leo; four sons, Richard (Beverly) of Prairie du Sac, Wis., Jeffrey of Chaseburg, Rodney (Nancy) of Westby and Brian of Chaseburg; seven grandchildren, Derek and Michael Davidson, Laura (Jon) Pedretti, Kristi Davidson, Liz (Khris) Kleba, Philip (Jill) Davidson and Jonathan Davidson; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew, Rachael, Rebecca and Marissa Pedretti, Jack and Samantha Kleba, and Taylor Davidson; two brothers, Howard (Mary) Hoff of La Crosse and Arizona, and Virgil (Myra) Hoff of Chaseburg; two sisters, Doris Williams of Chaseburg and Betty Haefer of Barneveld, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Hoff, Arlene Davidson and JoAnne Davidson; brother-in-law, Richard “Dicky” Davidson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Walter, in infancy, and Luell; six brothers-in-law, Bill Haefer, Wesley Williams and Raymond, Lloyd, Delbert and Virgil Davidson; and one nephew, Billy Hoff.

She very much enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking and baking to share as she spent time with family.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Pastor Dan Wollman will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Seland Funeral Home, Coon Valley, and at the church from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Middle Coon Valley Church addition.

Inez M. Hogden

ETTRICK, Wis. — Inez M. Hogden, 90, of Ettrick died Thursday, June 26, 2008, at Marinuka Manor, Galesville, Wis. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at French Creek Lutheran Church, rural Ettrick. Burial will be in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville. Visitation will be 11 a.m. Thursday until the time of services at the church. Zwikey Funeral Homes, Galesville Chapel, is assisting the family.

Geraldine Kyser

VIROQUA, Wis. — Geraldine Kyser, 78, of Viroqua died Friday morning, June 27, 2008, at Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua. She was born May 16, 1930, to Fred and Ora (Whiteaker) Tunks. She graduated from Viroqua High School and then attended beauty school and worked at various beauty shops in Viroqua. Gerry married Donald Kyser on Nov. 27, 1953, and they were later divorced. She loved embroidering and enjoyed her grandchildren very much.

She is survived by two children, Karen (Doug) Swenson of Viroqua and Monte (Diane) Kyser of Juneau, Alaska; three grandchildren, Matthew Swenson of Viroqua, Heather Swenson (Todd Sullivan) of Golden, Colo., and Sarah Swenson (Jesse) Jones of LaPorte, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Sydney Garavalia, Emma Jones and Max Sullivan; sisters-in-law, Geri Tunks of Westby, Wis., Arlene Howell of Readstown, Wis., Betty Harvey of Richland Center, Wis., and Ervilla “Mike” Kyser of Viroqua; brother-in-law, Odean Robson of Viroqua; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; brother, Robert Tunks; and sisters, Virginia Phillips and Charlotte Robson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Viroqua Church of Christ. Nathan Prong, minister, will officiate, with burial in the Manning Cemetery, rural Readstown. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker St. (Hwy. 56), in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of services at 11 a.m.

Justin ‘Nort’ James Peterson

GAYS MILLS, Wis. — Justin “Nort” James Peterson, 22, of Gays Mills died suddenly on Saturday morning, June 28, 2008, as a result of an automobile accident at rural Gays Mills. He was born Dec. 21, 1985, in Viroqua, Wis., to Steve and Kelly (Broadhead) Peterson. Nort graduated from De Soto (Wis.) High School in 2004. He was currently employed at BAPI in Gays Mills. He loved spending time with his daughter, Autumn, his family and friends. He had a special love for the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing pool. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Nort is survived by his loving daughter, Autumn, and his special friend, Ashly Beinborn, both of Boscobel, Wis.; his parents, Steve and Kelly Peterson of Ferryville, Wis.; one brother, Jeremy (Crystal) Peterson; a special niece, Hailey of De Soto; paternal grandparents, Jim and Bea Peterson of Ferryville, maternal grandparents, Jaelene Seymour of Ferryville and Darrel Broadhead of Viroqua; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Gale Seymour on July 21, 2002; special friend and cousin, Angie Scott on July 30, 2007; maternal great-grandparents, Joe and Bessie Broadhead and Helen and Marion Bird; and paternal great-grandparents, Jerald and Irene Runice and Albert and Helen Peterson.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, at the Ferryville Cemetery. Friends may gather at that time for the service. The family suggests memorials. The Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.

Thora A. Pfaff

Thora A. Pfaff, 97, of La Crosse died Friday, June 27, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born in Westby, Wis., on Nov. 11, 1910, to Tobias and Anna (Smidsang) Torgerson. She married Roy J. Pfaff on May 20, 1930, in Middle Ridge, Wis., and he preceded her in death on April 9, 1976. Thora is survived by her daughter, Faye (Al) Cooper of West Salem, Wis.; two sons, Steven Pfaff of La Crosse and Dennis (Katy) Pfaff of New Berlin, Wis.; 22 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Roy, she was preceded in death by one daughter, AnnaMae; two sons, Robert L. and DuWayne; five sisters and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will follow at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church from 11:30 on Tuesday until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Archie W. Preston

HIXTON, Wis. — Archie W. Preston, 75, of Hixton passed away Friday, June 27, 2008, at his home, while under the care of Black River Hospice. Memorial services will be at noon Wednesday at the Alma Center Assembly of God Church, Alma Center, Wis. Full military honors will follow the service at the church. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services at the church. Buswell Funeral Home of Black River Falls, Wis., is assisting the family with arrangements.

Pauline ‘Pat’ Schmoll

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Pauline “Pat” Schmoll, 91, of Caledonia died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Caledonia Care and Rehab. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church. A complete obituary will follow. Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ann Schubert

Mary Ann Schubert, 76, of La Crosse passed peacefully at her home Friday, June 20, 2008. She was born in Oelwein, Iowa, on March 13, 1932, to Louis and Gladys Buennecke. She married John Carl Schubert in Maynard, Iowa, on Aug. 4, 1951. They were married for 57 years. She dearly loved her family and grandchildren.

Mary was a substitute teacher for the La Crosse School District for many years and enjoyed working with children. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Kurt John (Debra) Schubert, Karl Louis (Mary) Schubert and Khris Fredrick (Bonnie) Schubert, all of

La Crosse; four grandchildren, Heather (Jamie) Brice, Rob, Justin and Kristine Schubert; and a brother, Robert (Maxine) Buennecke, of Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by two brothers. She will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Private family services were held. Memorials may be given to the Franciscan Skemp Foundation. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home assisted the family.

Beverly L. Seely

MADISON — On June 25, 2008, Beverly L. Seely, 71, of Madison passed from this world and went on to her next journey.

“Bev” was born Nov. 22, 1936, to Laverne “Bonnie” (Murphy) and Edward Carlson in Tomah, Wis. She was united in marriage to Norman Seely on Dec. 1, 1956, at Bethel Baptist Church in rural Camp Douglas, Wis. Their marriage was blessed with two children, a son Eddie and daughter Lori. Bev worked for several different branches of the UW System. She was always ready for new challenges and advancing her education. In 1990, she earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in business mid-management, in 1992, a bachelor of art degree, in 1999, a massage therapist or bodyworker license and in 2005 became a published poet.

She is survived by her husband, Norman; son, Eddie; daughter, Lori, all of Madison; brothers, Gene (Pat) Carlson of Tomah and Rick (Judy) Carlson, of Geronimo, Okla.; her aunt, Gretchen Hanson of Baraboo, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews; she was “Grandma Bev” to Dylan and Anjelica Seely of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Amber Ann Fortney of Columbus, Wis.; and a special friend, Fran, of Stoughton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bonnie and Edward Carlson; father and mother-in-law, Bird and Ruby Seely; infant brother; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and friends.

There will be a private service for immediate family. A memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison.

In accordance with Bev’s wishes, her remains will be cremated and scattered at a private location at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Wisconsin Heart and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Rodney K Sheffield

Rodney K Sheffield, 62, of La Crosse died peacefully Thursday, June 19, 2008, in his home after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Rod was born in La Farge, Wis., on Jan. 6, 1946, to Howard and Vernie (Paar) Sheffield and later moved to La Crosse, where he graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Air Force and is a veteran from the Vietnam War era. He spent 12 years in the service, which included spending several years serving as an electrical technician in the Security Services in Korea, Japan, Oklahoma, Texas and Mississippi. He was also an electrical instructor at Keesler AFB in Mississippi.

Rod retired from Trane Company in La Crosse in 2006 after working as an electrical engineer for over 30 years.

Rod married Mary Ellis in 1966, and they later divorced. They had two children, Craig and Kristina; and three grandchildren, who brought him much joy.

Rod loved history and had a large collection of Civil War books and memorabilia. One of his greatest passions in life was driving around the country and visiting various battle grounds and historical sites. He also enjoyed researching and compiling family genealogy information and collecting pictures and stories from past generations.

Rod was a loving father, grandfather and a loyal and faithful Packers fan. Rod also had a close relationship with his friends who shared his final days and who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his son, Craig (Stacey) Sheffield of La Crosse; his daughter, Kristina (Paul) Deloughery, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and his three grandchildren, Brigid, Aidan and Ruth. He is further survived by his mother, Vernie Sheffield of Viroqua, Wis.; a brother, Stuart (Andrea) Sheffield of Waukesha, Wis., and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Lester Sheffield, and his sister, Shirleen Howard.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Rod’s life on Thursday, July 3, at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St. Visitation will start at 3 p.m. with a remembrance service at 3:30 p.m. followed by military rites.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to the La Crosse Historical Society or your local food pantry.

The family would like to add special thanks to caregivers from Gundersen Lutheran’s Hospice program, and to Rod’s friends who assisted him in his final days — in particular, Katie, John, Cathy and Mary.

Irene J. Sill, 98, died in the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center on Saturday, June 28, 2008. A complete obituary will follow at a later date from Dickinson Family Funeral Home.
