Tokyo bike wins S&S event; local man fan favorite

.
A Japanese-built motorcycle won S&S Cycle’s 50th anniversary celebration competition Sunday, the final day of the weekend event that drew more than 25,000 people.

Keiji Kawakita, from Tokyo, said his winning bike, named “Stg-Nautirus,” resembled a submarine.

“I’m happy,” said Kawakita, 53, owner of Hot-Dock Custom Cycles.

Nearby, Craig Hill, an onlooker from Onalaska, Wis., admired the work put into the motorcycle.

“It shows the quality and attention to detail that the Japanese put into things,” said Hill, 54, a mechanic. “They make the best of a lot of things these days.”

For winning the competition, Kawakita won $50,000 in S&S products.

Howard Kelly, a spokesman for S&S, estimated more than 25,000 people attended the events from Friday to Sunday.

Local builder Doug Wozney won two awards in the competition, in which 50 custom-built bikes from around the world competed.

Wozney, of Onalaska, won the People’s Choice award and second place in the X-wedge engine category.

The owner of Dougz Custom Paint and Fabrication, Wozney said he incorporated the rear storage bags and rear fender into one unit, which made the motorcycle 8-inches narrower than a standard “bagger style” bike.

“It was unbelievable,” he said of winning the People’s Choice award, and added that winning the second place award, judged by other builders, confirmed not only local people liked him.

The motorcycle, built for Mark Blatt of Onalaska, cost more than $70,000.

" I believe the comment was meant to say that the Japanese do make many high quality items. Let's not forget that the heart of ALL the bikes in the show were made right here in Wisconsin by S&S. That's why they were entered. Also, if you had read Sunday's paper, you'd see that people that KNOW bikes cast the largest percentage of the votes, so they obviously saw something special in the one they chose. ALL of the bikes were true winners in their own right, but only one could be chosen. Let's also not forget that the "custom bike" was an American idea.
And yes, American cars are of superior quality. Unfortunately GM is closing several plants and the Japanese companies building cars here are expanding and hiring American workers to build them. Cameras and cell phones? Well, let's not go there. "

" For the record:

The bike that Doug Wozney built will be ridden. That was what it was built for.

Also, Doug did not say that the bike cost more than $70,000. What he said is that if someone were to ask him to build another bike like this he would charge about $70,000... For the S&S Competition, Doug ended up with a free motor, big discounts on parts and was gracious in applying his labor because of the opportunity to compete in such a major bike building event... "

" Some people are so out of touch.

This was a great event. Kudos to the local guy!

Nothing negative from me, I'll leave that to the other tooles around this site!

I can't believe how nice, respectful, and entertaining all the visitors were. Bikers rule! Can't wait for the next one!! "

" All the politically correct people should be having a fit because Mr Hill is perpetuating a stereotype. "

" Where's the story and photos of all the celebrity bikers that were in town? Didn't anyone see them downtown? Cool people! "

" Craig Hills comment shows the slow thinking mentality of todays american. He is likely referring to autombiles in which latest studies show we exceed in quality in many cases. Also I didnt think this one was the winner. "
