The Blue Stars took a big step toward making a case to be among the top 12 elite corps in the world by scoring 69.7 points at Drums on Parade at Camp Randall Stadium. They tied with the Glassmen of Toledo, Ohio, which finished 11th at the 2007 world championships.
It was the Blue Stars’ highest finish in a world-class show in more than two decades.
“I think our finish is tremendous, and we’re excited by the results,” said Brad Furlano, the Blue Stars’ executive director. “The kids are seeing the results of their hard work and starting to understand the audience really enjoys the show they’re putting on.”
The Blue Stars finished ahead of the Blue Knights of Denver (8th, 68.4 points), who placed seventh at last year’s championship. They also beat another 2007 finalist, Spirit from Jacksonville State University in Alabama (9th, 67.9 points), Crossmen, San Antonio, Texas (10th, 66.8 points), Troopers of Casper, Wyo. (11th, 65.7 points), Madison Scouts (12th, 65.4 points) and Pioneer of Milwaukee (13th, 58.7 points).
The Cavaliers of Rosemont, Ill., won the gold medal with 79.5 points, the Cadets of Allentown, Penn., captured the silver medal with 77.2 points and the Bluecoats of Canton, Ohio, won the bronze medal with 75 points.
“We’re getting great feedback on our show,” Furlano said. “People really seem to connect with the show, and there’s a level of joyfulness on the field.”
