Harvey M. Solberg
BLAIR, Wis. Harvey M. Solberg, 90, a longtime resident of Blair died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Grand View Care Center in Blair.
Harvey was born May 31, 1918, in rural Blair to Henry and Mabel (Austad) Solberg. Harvey attended school in Taylor, Wis., and loved playing basketball, fishing and especially dancing to “Old Time Music.”
Harvey’s parents owned a large farm between Blair and Taylor, where Harvey worked until his marriage to Marion J. Chrisinger on July 23, 1949, in Blair.
Harvey was employed with Blair-Preston Creamery as a milk hauler and later started his own business, Solberg Trucking and Excavating. He eventually sold the business and had a small lawnmower repair business. He loved puttering with things in his garage.
Harvey was very proud of the fact that he was the one who broke the ground and helped build the first three units of the Grand View Care Center in 1966.
In his final years, Harvey enjoyed the hunting season as all of the Solberg family would once again fill the house. He had many bird feeders and loved to listen to “Old Time Music” and watch his goldfinches and other birds as they ate the goodies he put out for them. He always enjoyed people who stopped by for a hot cup of coffee and a good visit.
Harvey’s family thanks everyone for the visits and for always lending a helping hand. Harvey loved the Blair area and often said it was “God’s Country.” For him, it was the best place in the world.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Marion; five children, Sandra (Dean) Johnson of Faribault, Minn., Larry (Margarita) Solberg of Mexico City, Helen (James) Jensen of Manistique, Mich., Al Solberg of Madison and Mary (Russell) Temme of Wauwatosa, Wis.; five grandchildren, Lonny (Stacey) Linberg of Madison, Miles Rumppe of Austin, Texas, Michelle Solberg of San Miguel, Mexico, Allison Solberg of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Sam Temme of Wauwatosa; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Landon Linberg of Madison; and a sister, Bernice Chrisinger of Blair.
In addition to his parents, Harvey was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth, and a grandson, Zachary Allan Solberg.
No funeral services will be held. Jack Funeral Home in Blair is assisting the family.
If there is “Old Time Music” in Heaven, Harvey is dancing.

Victor E. Mikkelson
SPARTA, Wis. Victor E. Mikkelson, 89, a resident of Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta went to Heaven on Sunday, June 29, 2008.
He was born on Feb. 6, 1919, in the town of Christiana in Vernon County, Wis., to Edna (Larson) and Mikkel Mikkelson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On Nov. 27, 1937, Victor married Ruby Cambell, and five children were born to this union.
Victor was a caring, highly-respected man who was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He brought a strong work ethic to all that he did. He enjoyed many years of farming and working as a census taker. He later worked as a butter maker before becoming village marshall in Cashton. His experience as marshall led him to pursue employment as a deputy for the Monroe Traffic Patrol, a position which he held for just over seven years. He enjoyed the Red Cross training he utilized in conjunction with that Traffic Patrol position. After moving to the Menomenee Falls, Wis., area in the 1960s, he was employed as a metalworker in that area for a number of years. Even after “retirement” and moving back to Sparta, he continued to be active and worked at the Sparta Hardee’s until the restaurant closed.
Victor’s family and loved ones will always treasure the unique and special gifts he created using his carpentry and metalwork skills. This craftsmanship and pride in his work were evident in the two cabins he built. He had a love of history and geography, and as an avid reader, eagerly shared this knowledge with friends and family, young and old. Victor took pleasure in writing poetry and stories about his life experiences and family. His writing talent was surpassed perhaps only by his gift for painting and artwork which reflect his love of nature. Victor, a great story teller, loved a good comedy television show or video. He enjoyed music, played the harmonica, and many of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren have memories of dancing the schottische with him. He was an active member of Wesleyan Church, and his generous spirit led him to volunteer in many areas of the church community.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of nearly 25 years, Marie; a brother, Harvey; and a sister-in-law, Phronie. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Alycmarie. Little Devon, with her beautiful eyes, has been watching from Heaven and waiting for her very special great-grandfather to arrive.
He is survived by his children, Margaret (Alfred) Namejunas of Altoona, Wis., Myrna (Dr. Ken) White of Lake Park, Fla., Karen Geier of La Crosse, Edith (Wally) Habhegger of Sparta and Daniel Mikkelson of Mauston, Wis. He is survived also by his stepchildren, Clarence Zimmerman of Markesan, Wis., Jerry (Barb) Zimmerman of Sparta, Dianna (Don) Ekern of Onalaska, Wis., Verna Schmidt of East Troy, Wis., James (Pam) Brown of Edwardsburg, Mich.; David Brown of Sparta, Robert (Diane) Brown of Sparta, Bonnie Kay (Roger) Herold, Clitherall, Minn., and Betty Symicek of Black River Falls, Wis. He is further survived by grandchildren, Brad Benedict of Appleton, Wis., Dawn (Daren) Jenson of Rogers, Minn., Steven (Jennifer) Woods of St. Augustine, Fla., Sherri (Robert) Rollins of Bainbridge, Ga., Douglas (Gary) Geier of San Francisco, Dean (Kristi) Geier of Milwaukee, Daniel (Julie) Geier of Grand Meadow, Minn.; Darrin (Ali) Geier of Vadnais Heights, Minn., and Tammy (Kimikia) Holmes of Yantis, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Drew and Joshua Jenson; Charles and Angelia Rollins, Ella Woods and Mason, Megan, Erik and Rebekah Geier. He is also survived by stepgrandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and countless friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, with the Rev. Dr. Ken White officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta. Family and friends are invited to call at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursday at from 10 a.m. until time of services.
