Downtown was crowded, but visitors had a good, safe time

.
It’s a little quieter in town since a couple thousand motorcyclists went home. But the weekend was an interesting experience — and it was fun to have downtown La Crosse so packed with people and their amazing machines.

On Friday afternoon, downtown La Crosse had a feeling that was similar to the afternoon of the opening day of Oktoberfest — with one exception. While on the first afternoon of Oktoberfest there is evidence that some people already are drunk (you can see them staggering out of the bars or looking a little unsteady walking back from the festgrounds), there was none of that reported during the last weekend.
There were a couple of motorcycle crashes over the weekend, but we don’t know if those motorcyclists had attended the La Crosse event.

About the only things that might have inconvenienced us locals were the lack of parking downtown because of all the bikes and the occasional noise from the motorcycles as they traveled our city streets. Neither of those turned out to be a major problem.

But we keep coming back to the fact that there were thousands of people in town — having fun, visiting with their friends and enjoying drinks in the bars — and there was no visible drunkenness and no sign of any problems.

When one of our reporters called La Crosse Police on Saturday night, he was told it was one of the quieter Saturday nights.

It proves a point that we often make in this column when talking about this city’s problems with alcohol abuse and binge drinking: That it is possible to have fun, enjoy some drinks and not end up so impaired that you put yourself at risk of accident or injury.

If you read the comments on our Web site about drinking, you may often see critics charging that we’re just trying to reintroduce Prohibition. But that’s not it at all. We’re not opposed to drinking; we’re just opposed to having so much to drink that you become severely impaired and vulnerable to accidents or worse.

Last weekend showed that it’s possible to have downtown filled with people who came here to have a good time — including time spent in the bars — without the problems that come with alcohol abuse.

It’s worth thinking about.

" No bar EVER forced anyone to drink or drink too much. Instead of cracking the whip, over-enforcing laws, entrapment teams and dozens of crappy tickets that ALL GET DISMISSED or CHARGES DROPPED, maybe this city needs to crack the whip on the drunks and the QWIK TRIPS! "

" Where were those who were parked on Third Street and not headed to the bars? I'll tell you because I was one of them. We were out walking around the streets admiring all the awsome machines parked along the few blocks reserved for us. We were visiting with others who were doing the same thing. But because we were not in the bars does not mean we didnt drop plenty of money while we were participating in the S&S event. We had an awesome weekend right here in my own home town. "

" I beleive the figure I beleive most is 25,000 participants. There certainly were not 25,000 participants on third street. Actually many of those parked on third street were not in the bars, were not headed for the bars, and were not drinking. Instead?, the inference all too many times is that people that drive motorcycles party hardy, drink while they are driving, and are irresponsible and downtrodden. The vast majority of participant's did not or do not drink while driving. Matter of fact they do not tend to imbibe any more than any slice of our population. Marlon Brando is dead, Cities and woman were not invaded, and the proof was in the pudding. Now hold up Coon Creek to this event! "

" Do you think that these people represented the "right" kind of clientele? AS our Mayor stated on Reynold's WIZM interview. Do you think any of these people had Tattoos from shops like Kirch's list waves off for placement in downtown areas? Do you think that this brought in more money than the all to often hard "State Track Meet"? Do you think it was quieter than the UWL sponsored Air Show. Do you think the sponsor brought more new jobs to the area than Riverside Center II? That had to be fast tracked for impending LHI employee growth needs, that you people have had an amnesia bout regarding. Funny, no brooks brothers suits, no pennies in the loafers, no sweaters around the neck, and no snoots, Just plain old money filled commerce with no taxpayer creative help. Damn it all? "

" Is this just obvious to me? What is not going on right now? College! that is right if college was in session there would have been incidents, guarenteed. "

" Good point doctor9, maybe bars should hand out punch cards and if they get so many drinks cut them off (like bar owners would go for that). You would think that the way drink prices have gone up nobody could afford to get that drunk (and they wonder why there is a war on drink specials). I don't see and end to the binge problem anytime soon. Seems like every generation tries to out-drink the last. It is like anything else, the older generation embellishes the tales of their drinking accomplishments and the younger generation thinks they are "tougher" and tries to show up "ole pop"! Kind of like the Family Guy episode where Peter goes to Ireland to find his real father and his new-found father won't accept him until Peter drinks him under the table. "

" Most bikers I know wouldn't think about getting blitzed and getting on their bikes. (Yes some of them might have a beer or two and ride) Many of them would be more likely to get behind the wheel of their car before they would get on their bike. Drinking and driving a car is foolish, drinking and riding is suicidal. We definitely have more drunks in town for Oktoberfest weekend. Many of them walk back to campus or ride the drunk shuttle back to their hotel room (after stopping at the Northside Festgrounds of course). I could have predicted less trouble for this event. "

" I would suggest spending more time/money on the source of the problem (like arresting bar employees that serve minors and already-overly-drunk patrons), rather than chasing the tiger's tail (like patrolling Riverside Park for drunks after dark). Prohibition is not necessary, but there seems to be less "cutting off" of impaired people than there could/should be. "
