Semi carrying cheese catches fire on Losey

.
A semi-truck hauling a load of cheese caught fire Thursday morning on Losey Boulevard near Main Street, snarling traffic on the busy travel route.

Driver Robert Headings said he first noticed the fire about 8:15 a.m. as he pulled through the signal lights at Main, heading south on Losey.
“I don’t know what happened,” Headings said, adding he believed it was an engine problem.

Though the fire department quickly reached the truck, the cab was engulfed in flames when they arrived. Headings told firefighters he was going to jump back in to try to unhitch the trailer but was unable to do so.

The refrigerated trailer was undamaged except for some smoke, firefighters said.

Headings, a truck driver for more than 30 years who now works for Riteway Transportation Inc. of Utah, had just picked up the load from Great Lakes Cheese of Wisconsin in the La Crosse Industrial Park.
