Judge gives man in prison more time

.
A La Crosse man already serving time in prison on a Vernon County drug case received an additional three years, nine months in prison Thursday after his probation was revoked in a 2002 explosives case in La Crosse County.

Patrick Dank, 32, of 1411 Weston St., will begin serving his time after he finishes the 2 years and 32 days he received in Vernon County Circuit Court in April. He faces even more time when he is sentenced next week in Vernon County Circuit Court for delivery of marijuana.
La Crosse County Circuit Judge Ramona Gonzalez called Dank “a danger to society and egocentric” and said the case “screams for the maximum sentence.”

In 2003, La Crosse County Circuit Judge John Perlich placed Dank on five years probation for possession of improvised explosives, after state and local investigators found a pipe bomb and other bomb making materials in Dank’s garage while investigating him for suspected drug dealing.

Also in 2003, Dank was sentenced to 18 months in prison and seven years of extended supervision for dealing cocaine in Vernon County.

Late last year, Dank was arrested in Vernon County for delivery of marijuana. He has since pleaded guilty to that charge and is set to be sentenced July 10 by Crawford County Circuit Judge Michael Kirchman.

Early this year, Dank’s extended supervision and probation were revoked.

During Thursday’s hearing, Dank’s attorney, John Matousek, explained that as a convicted felon, Dank had trouble finding a good paying job and he made the mistake of selling drugs to support his expectant wife and young children.

Gonzalez said Dank offended “all of the hard working people of La Crosse County” who work multiple jobs to survive when he said he had to sell drugs to make ends meet. She also said Dank is no different than his father, Lyle, who has served three prison terms and now faces federal drug charges, and brother, James, who is in prison on arson charges.

Dank apologized for his actions and said he let his wife and young children down. He also said he hopes the sentence will help him “get the message” that he needs to change his life.

Before being escorted out of court so he could return to prison, a still-shackled Dank was given a few moments to hold his infant son.

" To Just Some Dude...

Why have you had run-ins with this guy, his dad, and his brother??? Maybe you're hanging around the wrong people or smoking too much of something. Get one of those good drug dealers. "

" I've had no trouble with Ramona in the past and she does a wonderful job at officating weddings. If this case proves she is looking at getting tougher on criminals, then so be it. I hope she will be tougher on all of them, especially repeat offenders like Dank. He had his chance and messed up using quick fixes like selling drugs. Dank committed the crime; now he's stuck doing the time. I don't care what color or creed Dank or anyone else is; its time to get tough on repeat offenders. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me! Ramona gets it, do you? "

" Racist? Sexist? You must be talking about "Judge" Gonzalez. "

"Not only are you hillbillies uneducted, but you are also racists." Would you be so kind as to explain to this racist hillbilly what "uneducted" means? Donatello, this moron has no right to insult your education if he can't even spell the word. "

" And can't we stop calling her Ramona? That almost sounds like she is our friend. "

" What surprises me is that "Judge" Gonzalez gave any prison time at all. Please, good citizens of La Crosse, remember a write-in campaign if no one has the courage to run against her again in the next election. "

" Dude,
Just because you can't face the inconvenient facts doesn't make me uneducated or a racist.
I have a double major and my professors would be surprised that someone on the Dean's list is uneducated.
I have some biases like everyone, but I'm not a racist.
You my friend need to stop being a reactionary moron. "

" Come on Ramona, this is unreal, she even gives wife beaters a second chance so they can get out and beat their spouse some more and almost kill them (Sivanich case). What was wrong with giving this guy a chance? He is not necessarily the same as his dad and brother. "

" CONGRATS!

Not only are you hillbillies uneducted, but you are also racists.

Good Job. "

" It's a well known fact that Ramona goes easy on minorities and women, Dank should have tried harder to get another judge. "

donatello wrote on Jul 4, 2008 5:51 AM:

" Of all the cases before her she decides this guy deserves the maximum?
I'd say there is some bias there.
She has had some real winners too, and chose to give them several chances only to be shown up when many of them re-offended.
Hmmmmmmm, I smell a little bias or racism here...
Not saying the guy didn't deserve it, but many others before her in the past deserved it too. "

" Sorry Krusty, but I am a white male and when I was younger Ramona cut me a break. But good try at being a racist redneck.

Oh yeah and I have had a run in with this guy before.....and his brother.....and his father.

If anything the sentence was too light! "

Krusty wrote on Jul 4, 2008 2:10 AM:

" Dank had three things going against him in romana's court, he white, younger, and male. Ramona gives the light sentences to minorities, women, and the elderly or real young. "
