News tracker: Council vacancy

.
What we knew: Joe Ledvina unexpectedly resigned April 5 as president of the La Crosse Common Council. Two South Siders applied for the vacant District 15 post, which represents the swath of La Crosse bounded by State Road to the north, Broadview Place, 33rd Street, Leonard Street and Robinsdale Avenue to the south, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks to the west and city limits to the east.

What’s new: Carl Klouda removed himself from consideration Thursday just before interviews with the candidates. Klouda said circumstances had changed since he applied for the post, “and I just don’t think I could make the time commitment.” The council did interview the remaining candidate, Lorraine Rose Decker, a full-time homeschooler with a master’s degree in counseling.
What next: The council will vote on the District 15 vacancy at its regular meeting at

7:30 p.m. Thursday. If elected, Decker will serve until the term ends April 21, 2009. She said she couldn’t say, at this point, whether she then would seek re-election.

" Kaminazi, sometimes I am totally amazed that you can be that messed up. Yesterday you supported a child molestor's right to take pics of kids and today you write in defense of johnsrud. Something is totally wrong with your head. "

" Kami- 3/23/05, Mayor Johnsrud- "Holding closed meetings is not good government." Gee, what if someone aired (media) the content of the secret developer meeting law Skippy had passed almost immediately upon taking office, and then followed it with numbers and percentages of closed door meetings for Park/Rec, RDA, Planning, PWB, etc meetings timed perfectly before election. I think I'll get on that. Oh wait, I think I already have! "

" Mayor Johnsrud is doing his best under these circumstances and Deak Swanson would have been worse. Only the write-in candidate would have frozen things and had the council work on getting this house in order by making certain no new spending without paying off TIFs. He would have limited TIFs, but sought state funding for other projects. At least Johnsrud is trying to move forward; Deak would have tried to obtain any property available to grease his profitteering hands. He would not be doing this for the city, but himself. "

" My mistake , the Mayor gave those raises to Department Heads totally sidestepping your elected representatives, the Council. Sorry! "

" Why would any well meaning citizen consider serving time on this Council. You would have to be a very strong person. Yes, exactly like Richmond and Bloedron. Mayor Skippy just managed to give more than a handful of Department Heads generous raises, in a time of looming recession. He also was caught red handed making appointments with Council members to lobby thm on Tri-State. Although Bloedorn and Richmond were not called. Kudos to Farmer for declining to meet, as he thought it should be 'debated publicly'. This Mayor has a nucleus of majority votes that will vote his way on anything. Even $15.9 million dollar of our money projects that they have not seen a contract or set of plans? "
