There is nothing wrong with foreign language instruction

.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama suggested that American students should study Spanish. From the outcry, one might have thought he was advocating the overthrow of our government.

Bobby Earle, who writes a column on a Republican Web site, had this to say: “Our education system is crazy enough with all these liberal feel-good programs. Forget adding, subtracting, spelling and grammar. Now, despite the fact that the rest of the world is learning English, he says that American kids should learn Spanish? What? Learn Spanish? Yes, and it shows just how out of touch and far left Obama is. We need a president who will put America first, not push for our culture to be forgotten.”
Say what? That’s one of the most stupid comments we’ve heard in years. American schools have been teaching foreign languages for decades. One of those foreign languages is Spanish, which is used by a significant number of people who live in the Western Hemisphere, with us.

We weren’t aware that learning other languages made someone a left-leaning person who wanted to push for our culture to be forgotten. Actually, part of our culture is having immigrants come here and build new lives — including people from Spanish-speaking countries.

For the record, here’s what Obama actually said.

Speaking to supporters in Powder Springs, Ga., Obama criticized attempts to have an English-only policy for the United States.

Then he said: “I agree that immigrants should learn English ... But understand this, instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English — they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about how your child can become bilingual. We should have every child speaking more than one language. It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beaucoup, right?”

American teachers of foreign languages have been urging young people to learn other languages for years. It doesn’t mean they want students to be anti-American, or forget their culture. It just means that they want young Americans to be fluent in other languages, as young people from other parts of the world are comfortable in other languages.

It’s surprising — and a little depressing — that the idea of foreign language instruction should be so shocking to some people.

" Repeat after me -- 'Me llamo "Athenry"; vivo en el estado de Wisconsin; yo estudio espanol!' I live in the Phoenix valley in Arizona and by far MOST Mexican and other Latin American immigrants speak BOTH Spanish and English, though just as YOUR Spanish may be a bit 'simple' and heavily accented there are hispanics who have limited vocabularies and a pronounced accent. There are of course those who know very little English, for now, but my experience has been that FAR MORE hispanics speak English adequately and even fluently than 'anglos' speak Spanish. Better crack open that Spanish language book 'Athenry' and do it today!... "

Athenry wrote on Jul 12, 2008 2:29 PM:

" Seeing as how we are doing very little to actually prevent illegal immigration and the fact that it is primarily because of illegal immigration that spanish was the chosen language Obama mentioned, my response is this, I will learn spanish when they learn english. "

" In America there is always an 'ignorance fan club' -- see Jimmy Gillman's latest blog -- and uh voila! (to coin a term) Esta aqui! Gee! I'm shocked! Shocked that there are Americans who can't understand that um 'change' is gonna come and they'll need to 'use it.' Kiddies a-larnin' that espanol in the hollers o' Vernon county MAY seem bee-zar but the world arrives si como no? even in the darkest glens and coulees. Obama's a very bright guy who actually I think is REALLY going to be the cliche -- 'the next president of the United States,' Barack Hussein notwithstanding. You may as well get used to that too and uh re: Phil Gramm and Jawn McCain 'Stop whining!'... "

" YAWN!! Imagine this , Welchy bringing the war into yet another topic. I am sure you know spanish, french, chinese, yiddish, and swahili. As always it is how you say something not what you say. Obama needs to think a little harder prior to saying things from now on, it may just cost him an election. "

" Just another form of appeasment by BHO. Exactly the reason why we don't need him as president. Why should we go out of our way to please others. The reason so many other countries learn English is because they want to do business with us. "

Michael Welch wrote on Jul 12, 2008 12:19 PM:

" Learning other languages can best begin from the first day a kid starts school. Children's minds are indeed 'sponges' re: language (they are actually 'wired' as such) and just as Canadians have French we ought to have Spanish and of course other offerings as possible. It costs money sure but so do endless wars but THIS would be an excellent investment for now and the future. Those who 'fear' this future (look right below) as well as the present can call names and manufacture their own realities to their liking but the US has ever been re: John F. Kennedy 'a nation of immigrants' and its dynamics will continue to be 'in flux.' And as Ronnie Reagan used to say -- Stay tuned!... "

Common Sense wrote on Jul 12, 2008 10:58 AM:

" Of course anyone who wants to learn a foriegn language should do so. I think it was the use of the words, "it's embarassing" that set many people off. Obama was letting us peons who are not interested in indulging in cultural exchange know what he thinks of us, sort of like the "bitter people clinging to their guns or religion...." comment. He's just showing us what a snob he is, again. "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Jul 11, 2008 5:04 PM:

" Double A,

Right and wrong. You are right that I confused you with Eddie. Eddie was the one slinging names, not you. My mistake. I originally asked Eddie about Mexico and France and when you posted that Mexico and France's positions on their National language requirements had no bearing on America, I confused the two of you.

You are wrong about me needing the last word and your own bigotry. But respond or don't, it doesn't really matter to me, cause I'm looking forward to the weekend. "

Double A wrote on Jul 11, 2008 4:05 PM:

" Phil 'O you are hilarious! I never called anyone a name and you said I did. You lied. And the proof is right on this page! A bigot is 'one devoted fanatically to one's own group' and your argument for a national language is bigotry. I fully expect to see another blast back at me that makes absolutely no sense at which point you will have the last word because that's what you most desire. "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Jul 11, 2008 2:19 PM:

" Double A,

You are a bigot according to Websters Dictionary. I don't throw that out to be mean, but to prove a point that you are working and thinking inside your own definitions and not those common to most people. Your obstanance is shown by your refusal to answer the questions about France and Mexico. You wish to frame the discussion in your special way, and label those who disagree with you with $3 names. It may be convincing to you, but to the most casual observer, it's ignorant and hateful. "

Double A wrote on Jul 11, 2008 1:57 PM:

" Phil 'O - I'm not a bigot. You stated that by not learning English, business actions will be limited. My point is that other cultures, like the Hmong for example, are OK if they can feed and clothe their family - it is good! And I'm all for that kind of mindset here in this beloved country. If we have to import that attitude, and the folks who sport it can't speak English, I'm still all for it. Take your maximized profits and national language as far as I'm concerned. And as for requirements in Mexico and France ...let's think in our own paradigm unique to our situation! "

Michael Welch wrote on Jul 11, 2008 1:24 PM:

" Americans are better off the more they learn of the wide world, of which their ignorance is usually quite vast. Learning Spanish ought to be as de riguer as say the Canadians study French because the US is in practicality (and 'practicality' is supposed to be an American trait) a bilingual nation too. I'd throw in Chinese by the way; they're learning English and why have the Chinese get ahead of 'US' in EVERYTHING eh? (But of course not in endless wars and everlasting quagmires; the Chinese have 'fallen behind' in that I notice.) Most Americans will remain English speakers primarily but I live in Arizona now where Spanish is all about; it's only part of the changing landscape and unavoidable... "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Jul 11, 2008 12:52 PM:

" Double A,

I don't know who you are talking about or to, but nobody said that business can't be done without speaking English. The point was, if you want to be more successful, reach more people, conduct more business in America, then learn English. There are Hmong businesses that exist in LaCrosse where English is rarely if ever used, but their clientel is limited to Hmong, and their profits are also limited.

Your assumption that wanting English as the national language means that I or anyone else is 'hating' people, is bigoted and wrong. "

Double A wrote on Jul 11, 2008 11:21 AM:

" Law isn't the focal point here. If Obama wanted to mandate anything regarding this, he would mandate that the 'opportunity' be presented to our citizenry ...he would not mandate that our citizenry take advantage of that opportunity. His word "should" can be taking in the context of his 'opinion'. He can have an opinion and lead a country, you know. If you don't want an opinionated president, then you want a puppet. "

Double A wrote on Jul 11, 2008 11:16 AM:

" Do you realize that we could live pleasantly together without saying a word to each other? If you say business can't be conducted here without speaking English, I say you are lazy, and frankly, narrow-minded. Man up and live and love the people around you. "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Jul 11, 2008 10:25 AM:

" Eddie,

So is France and Mexico (and many other countries) fascists tyranical countries for having National languages required for citizenship? Are French and Mexicans xenophobes for having a National language?

By the way, Websters defines a bigot is one who is obstinately devoted to his own opinions and prejudices. That pretty much defines everyone who posts on any opinion page or blog, including you. "

just al wrote on Jul 11, 2008 10:24 AM:

" To Greenlite, Quit making excuses for other people. By the way where do you get your information from? You think teachers are out there not teaching correctly or are you one of them?
To Eddie, I am not affraid of foriegners, what I am affraid of are liberals who are brainwashing America into thinking that it is ok for immigrants to come over here and force us to learn Spanish to appease them. Also Freedom of speech has nothing to do with form of language used. "

Eddie wrote on Jul 11, 2008 9:58 AM:

" As for Senator Obama's comments, I don't think that all our children "should" learn Spanish. If they do learn it, then more power to them, but they are free to learn any language - be it Hmong, French, German, Japanese, etc. Our kids have so many opportunities to learn and grow and interact with the world; they should not be chained to learing just Spanish. If our schools require students to learn Spanish, then they are creating a de facto second "National Language". Here in the Upper Midwest, we have been steadily losing our German, French, and Scandinavian heritages. Why not promote learning those languages?? It would do our society and our economy a lot of good!! "

Eddie wrote on Jul 11, 2008 9:51 AM:

" Here is a little known part of the U.S. Constitution: "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech....". Immigrants have been coming to this country for centuries, and there has always been a small percentage of them who don't learn English. Those who don't accept the loss of social communication and job opportunities. That is what happens in a country free from governmental or social tyranny. Those who want to install English as the "National Language" - thereby forcing people to learn it - are nothing more then fascist tyrants in disguise. They are nothing more than xenophobic bigots, as they are terrified of people who are different than them. "

Myturn wrote on Jul 11, 2008 9:20 AM:

" 60% of the world speaks Spanish. Most of the from progressive/successful countries are bilingual. Get up to speed people! "

Greenlite wrote on Jul 11, 2008 9:13 AM:

" As a follow-up. Many educators have bought into the following reasoning for not correcting poor speaking habits; "well this may be the way they speak at home, and if we correct them we are telling the student that the way they are brought up is wrong", or "we could really make the student feel bad if we point out that they use improper English". Students have used the old deflection tactic of saying, for example in Math or science class "what is this English class? I thought we were supposed to be learnin' Math", etc. "

Greenlite wrote on Jul 11, 2008 9:05 AM:

" Learning another language is a good thing. But a huge problem (mostly with younger people, who are being enticed to vote for Obama) is that pop culture has weaked their ability to speak and/or write proper English. They through around improperly structured sentences that make them sound as though they "ain't got no schoolin' at all". There is no wonder that a Hmong immigrant who has been here for years struggles with American English. Our kids are sloppy with the language, and the Educational system has not done much to bring this sloppyness to the attention of the student(s). "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Jul 11, 2008 7:29 AM:

" Obama's statements are full of falsehoods, false assumptions, and generalizations. First, he assumes that immigrants (no categorizing of illegal vs. legal, by the way) "will learn English." Really? We have legal Hmong immigrants here in LaCrosse county that don't know English after MANY years. If America had a policy of English as it's National language, it would actually help people. If you don't know English, your business actions will be limited.
Second, Obama says "we NEED to make sure" our kids know Spanish. Why is he want to require Spanish, but not English? Third, he generalizes by saying "all Europeans" speak English, but Americans can't speak foreign languages. Fourth, Obama assumes Americans are against their kids being bilingual. The fact this man wants to be America's leader, but doesn't really understand America is quite terrifying. "

Clyde wrote on Jul 11, 2008 6:50 AM:

" I like the Senator's point of view except since he was raised in Indonesia I have never heard of his mastery of the Indonesian language. Every child in America, citizen of not is given a minimum of 13 years of FREE education so if they are not learning a second language, WHY NOT? I can only speak English yet all of my children ARE fluent in Spanish, Portugues and some can also speak French and Italian. Unfortunately the Senator is NOT for English only education which is a point of view that is a DIS-SERVICE to non-English background students and future welfare recipients. "

just al wrote on Jul 11, 2008 6:37 AM:

" You have quite a spin going on here. I do not think too many people have a problem sending their kids to learn Spanish or any other language. It was the words that Obama used to make his point. He should have just stopped after saying kids should want to be bilingual. If he had done that I would not have a problem with what he said. That being said I do think English should be spoken in the US. If I go to a foreign country the same expectation can be placed on me to speak their tongue. "
