DA: Teen stopped breastfeeding baby, knowing it would die

.
A La Crosse teen confessed she stopped breastfeeding her daughter last August two days after giving birth at home knowing the infant would die, prosecutors said Monday.

Indra Book, 19, of 506 Farnam St., Apt. 1, then put her daughter’s lifeless body in a cooler and, this spring, put it out with the garbage, said La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke.

The child’s remains have not been recovered, he said. Investigators still are trying to determine where the body and cooler were kept between August and spring, he said.

New information began to emerge Monday in the case against Book, who was arrested Friday on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse.

She appeared Monday in La Crosse County Circuit Court for a bond hearing with public defenders Patricia O’Neil and Vincent Rust. The case was delayed until Friday so Gruenke can review police reports to decide which charges to file.

Book is in the La Crosse County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

The case against 21-year-old Adam O’Connor, of 813 S. Sixth St., also arrested Friday for being party to the crime of hiding a corpse and obstructing an officer, was continued until July 23. He was released on a $5,000 signature bond and is being represented by attorney Keith Belzer.

Book’s live-in boyfriend, 28-year-old Jacob Wahnke, said the couple moved in together about five months ago after dating for seven months. The two spoke on the phone Sunday night, and Wahnke said Book was “scared.” He declined to comment further on the situation. Book’s mother declined to speak with the Tribune.

Book had worked part-time at Pickerman’s Soup and Sandwich in downtown La Crosse since August 2007, said restaurant manager Pat Weinberger. She was terminated Friday because she is unable to work her shifts, he said.

Book was not pregnant when she applied and interviewed, Weinberger said.

“She had a couple good friends that worked here, and none of them had a clue she was ever pregnant,” he said.

Weinberger called Book a friendly employee, but one that needed guidance. The staff was shocked and surprised by the charges, he said.

Book and O’Connor were friends, Weinberger said. Contact between them now is restricted as conditions of their bonds.

People’s Food Co-op General Manager Michelle Schry said O’Connor still is employed at the downtown La Crosse business, but she declined further comment. A telephone call to O’Connor’s residence was not returned.

Book has a minor criminal record in Wisconsin, including a 2006 conviction in La Crosse County for criminal damage to property. O’Connor’s history includes a citation for violating a yellow light in 2007.

Both are graduates of La Crosse Central High School.

" For those of you defending her or saying she "needs help," let's remember: depending on which statistics you read, between 65 and 90 percent of felons reoffend. Either way, it's the majority. For the girl defending her that was pregnant at 14 - that's why it's suggested that kids don't have unprotected sex, and if they do they should get help. Also, being 14 and being 19 are very different. It may not seem like a large gap, but emotionally and physically the ages are very different. An 18 year old is an adult, and should know how to take care of a newborn, while a 14 year old is a child that may not know how to care for a newborn. This chick is NOT innocent. "

You have got to be kidding! Surely, you are not trying to justify this woman's horrible deeds!

She admitted to starving her baby to death, with the intent to kill the baby. There is simply no excuse or justification for such actions. We don't have to "be in her shoes" to know that it is wrong. I know most would prefer to live in a morally relativistic society, but no matter how you slice it or what world view you look through, the killing of an infant is absolutely repugnant!

Her salvation is between her and God, and justice will sort the truth out. However, if her confession holds true, the State should take her life! "

" gwar I am the mother of 5 beautiful daughters..anyone who would not take their baby to the doctor if they suspect something is wrong is WRONG!!! Or give the baby a chance to thrive is again WRONG..yes hothead I am...but I would have never even thought to put my childs lifeless body in a cooler and store it until it was convinient for me to dispose of it..come on her words not mine. " This is why we have courts and trials. For the record, the first statement of the article was qualified with the term "prosecutors said." On the news when the prosecutor was making this statement there was a closeup on Indra who could be heard saying "that's not true." I'm not saying she's innocent, nor would I dare to say she's guilty at this point. "ROT ROT ROT" is an emotional response that invites mistakes, especially when you don't take time to find out what the truth really is. Makes me glad I don't live in a society where hot-heads run around burning people at stakes at the drop of a hate, or the mere accusation of a crime. "

" new world order: You have GOT to be kidding. Seriously? She knowingly killed her child. She stopped FEEDING her...ON PURPOSE. There is a big difference in what you did and what she did. You left, which as crappy as that is...at least you left him with someone. She KILLED her daughter. Your son had a chance to live his life...this poor baby girl wasn't given that chance. I can't believe that you feel sympathy towards her. She needs to rot in prison for the rest of her life. She deserves NO sympathy. There is absolutely no excuse for what she did. "

" She should go to prison and rot, but oh the insanity plea because she was young and had a baby....been there done that and survived. My daughter is now 18 and going to college thank you very much!!! ROT ROT ROT!!! "

" New World Order again you have got to be kidding me!! Dont charge her with MURDER...I was pregnant at age 18 had the baby when I was 19 and never never never would I have thought to not feed my daughter. That baby was flesh and blood to me, she was my life. Good for you that after 18 years you finally decided to be a dad WOW!! All the hared work was done oh high five goes to you LOSER!!! Whatever don't look for sympathy from any single mother trying her best to raise her child when she was with a dead beat dad and yes that is what you are. "

" New World Order-are you kidding me?! Don't charge her with murder-she murdered her new born baby. She admits that she stopped nursing her child and knew that the baby would die. She lives near one hospital and the other hospital is just down the road. She had so many other options besides the one that she picked. You say have sympathy for Ms. Book. Waht about that poor innocent child? When Ms. Book stopped feeding her who was looking out for her-no one. The mother obviously hid the pregnancy and then killed her baby to hid it. I have no sympathy for this woman and hope that she spend time in jail and forever remembers what she did and feels guilt for the rest of her life. She should never be allowed to have another child. "

" new world order: Let's read the first sentence again and keep your eye on the stars (*). "A La Crosse teen *confessed* she stopped breastfeeding her daughter last August two days after giving birth at home *knowing* the infant would die, prosecutors said Monday." You call this insanity? This is murder! Ms. (where's DAD?) Book is a murderer of her own child! R U kidding me?!? "

" I hope this suspect is not charged with murder. I thought of myself when I read about her situation...I became a father twenty-two years ago at age 18. I can say from experience that becoming a parent at a young age can drive anyone insane. I'm surprised I was never charged with anything. I moved to La Crosse from Pennsylvania to lessen that possibility. I abandoned my son soon after he turned 5 and left him to his mother. Three years ago, when he was 18 and about to graduate from high school, him and I established a new relationship and understanding with each other. Things now couldn't be better. I love him with all my heart. Miracles do happen! Please have sympathy for Ms. Book! "
