Federal court ruling not expected to change Dairyland’s plans

.
GENOA, Wis. — A federal appellate court decision that drastically changes future federal clean air emission requirements will apparently not stop Dairyland Power Cooperative from installing air scrubbers at its Genoa power plant.

This also means the cooperative’s plans to acquire land to construct a landfill, which could require up to 600 acres in Vernon County, will likely move forward.
Federal officials and those who work for environmental interests are sorting through Friday’s ruling that struck down the Bush administration’s application of the Clean Air Interstate Rule.

The rule was one of the primary reasons Dairyland was installing scrubbers at its Genoa coal-fired power facility and developing the landfill.

In a statement Tuesday, Dairyland said it is “not making any immediate changes in its planned investments in environmental controls, including the scrubber project currently under way at Genoa.”

Vernon County Board Supervisor Dennis Brault called Dairyland’s announcement “depressing.”

“I speak for myself on this, but I think we’re wasting a golden opportunity to step back and develop alternatives to the landfill,” Brault said.

The Vernon County landfill, one of three sites being considered for Dairyland’s ash landfill, is in Brault’s district.

" The answer is to stop burning coal and either retrofit the plant to burn natural gas or invest in wind/biomass/solar and most importantly, efficiency. I wonder how people in La Crosse are going to feel when the 120ft towers on a 345Kv line that is now in the process of being routed from the Dakotas to the cities and then down through Winona to La Crescent are going to feel when they see that the next measure is to take the line from the south side of La Crescent and run it to French Island and then cross over between Onalaska an Holmen. This is all to ship almighty coal across the country. It is one big reason Dairyland wants to continue. "

" The repeal of CAIR is a great opportunity...
an opportunity for Dairyland Power Cooperative to act as the cooperative it is and take the lead in pursuing the alternatives that do exist. An opportunity for Dairyland to form a task force with the community it serves and the community it wishes to dump on. An opportunity to go past doing the "bright thing" and do the right thing...an opportunity to look at the BIG picture and get away from the "smoke stack mentality" of looking at air, water, and land pollution as seperate entities. Maybe, just maybe, if DPC scrubs the scrubber to look at alternatives it might be able to recover from the public relations nightmare it has encountered in the last year. But then again, if DPC stays the course as the article states, maybe not. "

" johnnyrover, see, that's the problem. They have alternatives to clean the air vs. dump the ash. They are just not willing to do so.

And while they clean the air AND dump the ash, they are going to poison the water and the land they grow food you consume.

Yeah, nice trade off.

" Mack, are you serious? That county is RICH w/ nutrients, culture, and families. Land owners, rightful property owners having their land stolen from them. How about I come to your house and remove your garage so I can put up a cell tower.

I mean, you don't need car shelter, but we all need better cell service!

This is just insane, that you would take a beautiful county in western WI and dump waste on it. On top of it being a flood plain to boot! Great, now we have more contamination potential; something we have ample time to prevent and change.

STAND UP LA CROSSE, DON'T LET DAIRYLAND BULLY OUR NEIGHBORS!!!! "

" Clean Air or a Landfill....hmmm - I would choose the landfill. "

" If we cannot even dump our fly ash in the poorest of our counties, what will we ever do with the nuclear waste? "
