" 911 was a joke. I couldn't believe it. The keys were actually on my console, where my child got them. MORAL of the story, anything can happen, ALWAYS be aware. LESSON learned. It takes seconds for your child to do something. I think that all police should have a key or something that opens all cars. (The sheriff said they have been sued after opening vehicles, nothing like saying thank you!) "

" To Bmaier,
Let me this right - your daughter locked you out of your van!? Where were the car keys - probably in the ignition right where you left it? Thank the manufactures for the safety devices when a vehicle is in park - you could have had a lot worse trauma on your hands. It's all about responsibility! "

" How does one "forget" they have their child with them. A five year old should be in a car seat and they take up some space wouldn't you see it when you close your door, before you go in the store?
I sincerely hope both these "mothers" (if you can call them that) are punished. I would like to see them locked in a car in the heat for as long as they left their children in the car. And the baby's mom I would hope that the courts make parenting classes mandatory for her. Why WHY?
I just don't understand. I hope the tribune does updates on this story for us. "

" I feel compelled to write in. I can't imagine how a parent forgets a child. This happened to me last night, I did not forget my child at all. I picked her up at day care and I was having a conversation with the supervisor, when my daughter (2) crawled into the front seat. Unknowing that she had locked the doors. I was locked out of my van and my child was inside. We called 911, they told us they do not respond to locked doors anymore, child inside or not. Every locksmith in the phone book was unavailable to help. 800# Kia called the sheriffs department direct for us, they showed up and called a towing company. (They also calmed mom down, before we had two people in need of an ambulance.) 45 minutes later and she was out. "

" I don't get it..... so what.... she thought she forgot them at home??? Any mother then forgets about her child being with them is not fit to be a parent!!!! "

" I hope the county goes after this woman. Where did she think her kid was if she was not with her? If the mom is such an air-head knowing if her kid is with her or not, how about basic driving skills. Oh a red light, what should I do now? Look a stop sign, I wonder what that means? One needs a license to drive a car, should have a license to have a kid. This woman's parent lic. would be revoked, permanently! "

" Along with these others, I can not imagine forgetting my daughter is with me. Not only the stupidity of leaving a child in a hot car, but leaving a child alone where they could get kidnapped. I am constantly keeping watch over my child so she is not a victim. If people are that careless, they should have their children taken from them and placed with people who love and care for them. Our job as parents is to ALWAYS protect our children and watch out for their best interest. Some people make me sick. Get with the program. Take care of your kids. "

" Jerminator, I'm glad that I am not the only parent that has a problem understanding how you can forget a child in a car. I have the opposite issue, I almost immediately notice the emptiness in the car when I drop them off somewhere. When a child is quiet for too long I look right away to see what they are up to! I picture people that are so busy in their life that they don't have time for kids. (They grow up too fast that you miss out if you don't slow down and smell the scent of a child's hair, dirty or clean.) Too many people think they have to have children for status. These people should do us all a favor and get fixed. "

" Good job to the Tribune on your own little experiment with temperatures inside the car. Maybe someone can expand it, with windows down, in shade, etc and see if their is a difference, plus not leaving therometer in the direct sunlight but in a shadow inside of car with windows up. "

" It's not a smart idea to leave a child in a hot car in the first place, not to mention that it just isn't safe in this day and age. I recently walked out of a Kwik Trip and saw a woman get out of her car and leave a baby in a carrier in the front seat-and left the car unlocked and running. It's just basic parental skills to put the welfare of the child first. "

Hello, these people must be brain-dead and should have their parental rights taken away, only to be reinstated after intense parenting classes and counseling. my God, some of these people make me sick.
