Onalaska schools may ban locker room phones

.
ONALASKA, Wis. — Cameras, video recorders and cell phones will be prohibited from Onalaska school

locker rooms if the school board gives final approval to a privacy policy at its July 28 meeting.
“Cell phones create all sorts of opportunities for people to use impulsively and severely damage another person,” Superintendent John Burnett said at the school board meeting earlier this week.

“According to state statute, all districts must have this policy in place.”

The policy will be explained to all athletes and their parents, according to high school activities director Ryan Vogler.

“It is because we don’t want kids thinking it is a joke or it is not serious. It is very serious, and it just can’t happen,” Vogler said.

The policy also prohibits members of the media from locker rooms before, during or after games and practices.

The La Crosse School District requires students first get their principal’s permission before bringing cell phones or other electronic communication devices to school, said Randy Nelson, the district’s associate superintendent of instruction. If approved, he said, use of the devices is strictly limited, including not infringing on the rights of other students.

Holmen High School students can use cell phones only in the lunch room before and after class and during lunch, said Dave Oldenberg, assistant principal. Cell phones are not allowed at Holmen’s middle or elementary schools, he said.

The ability of cell phones to transmit digital photos and text messages led La Crescent-Hokah High School District to banish them from campus in 2005.

Local News Editor Scott Rada contributed to this report.

" READIN, RITHMATIC AND RITIN TEXT MESSAGES. School office has a phone, if you need the kid, call there. Last thing you need in a school is a phone/camera and text pad. Got a new "R" for you... RESTRICT AND BE STRICT. You are raising idiots who don't know how to make change or spell a 10 letter word correctly. GT MY DFT. DUH! YR RASIN A BNCH OF DCKIN FUMMES. "

" I agree that cell phones should be kept in lockers at school. However, I understand why a lot more kids have them. A lot of families have gotten rid of home phones all together and strictly use cell phones to save money on land lines that barely get used. Therefore, every member of the family ends up with a cell phone. "

" janied-

I completely agree with you. It is insane the age at which children are recieving and using cell phones. "

" The kids on the phone riding a bike only alludes to a bigger problem, adults driving and talking. I'm not being hypocritical either, I use my cell only for emergencies or coordination. Me and my wife share a plan that has 400 minutes a month (the least we could get). We used less than 200 minutes last month (I personally used 23 minutes and didn't call anybody.) I wonder how many other people that have cell phones can say that. It wouldn't hurt my feelings much if they tore down all of those ugly towers and got rid of them. Ask 911 dispatchers how well they like cell phones. What really gets me is when the public calls me at work and their phone cuts out over and over again. I think I am going to start hanging up on them so they stop wasting my time. Oops, call dropped. "

" I agree Willie 100% and for janied, that is funny. I have already seen one idiot kid on a bike with a cell phone trying to text. Wamo the bike goes right in to the curb, he flies off of it. He was ok, but I think he broke his cell phone. And that's our future leaders???... whew "

" Senior Advocate - I'm pretty sure neves was poking fun at Dutchboy's comment. As for the cell phones, when I was in high school, 8 years ago, I knew 3 people who owned cell phones. I was at the Ona-Aquinas football game last fall when the lights went out, and the entire student section pulled out their phones! Wow, how the times have changed. "

" Well DutchBoy and neves, good for you, if you had your way we would train and produce more and more idiots running around stating "fooball is my life, I live for fooball and baseeebaall" What? mathamaticss, wasss that.
Throw away the lives of 99.999% of all kids to produce , possible 1 major athlete. Talk about intelligence good grief can we get anymore dumbed down in our schools.
NO NEED FOR ANY CELL PHONE IN SCHOOL. If you cannot live with that then let them have the stupid things kept in their lockers only. "

" Why do these 'kids' need a cell phone anyways? I think it's hilarious when you see a kid - on a bike - because they're too young to drive, talking away on a cell phone. Puhleaze! "

" There is NO reason to have a cell phone in school. If you need to go home, or need a parent, call them from the office, which is how it was before cell phones. Kids have way too many priviledges these days, and it is not helping them! John, you are doing the right thing. "

" As an Onalaska resident with a child in high school, I'm glad that they are formalizing this policy. The locker rooms at the high school already have signage stating that cell phones are not allowed in the locker rooms. It "appears" to me that they are only formalizing a policy that is already in place. "

" Neves: you rock. You must know that there are two sets of rules for the kids of Onalaska HS. This all depends on social status, money, and most importantly - participation in sports or show choir. "

" There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that any student needs a cell phone at school, period. They should be kept in lockers for use only when school is not in session. Any student found with a cell phone at any other time should have it taken away. They are a personal luxury item and unnecessary. "

neves wrote on Jul 18, 2008 7:35 AM:

" I agree with DutchBoy. Our schools should be frevently dedicated to making sure we produce star athletes. The most important thing we can do for our children today is to make sure they win games. They really only need to know enough Math, to be able to count high enough to keep score anyway. As long as they can read the playbook, that should take care of English as well. I suppose they better learn enough Science to be able to fix sprained ankles though. "
