The Cashton Fire Department was dispatched to the business at 199 Front St. about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Cashton Fire Chief Dennis Dickman said. Flames were shooting from the top of a grain elevator.
The fire was extinguished, but flared up again overnight and several times Thursday because of old cork insulation, Dickman said. Fire crews finished at the scene about 9 a.m.
The fire spread to the office area, but a feed bag storage area was spared, he said. Dickman declared the business a total loss and said the department is working to establish what caused the blaze.
No was one injured. Westby and Viroqua fire departments assisted at the scene.
Business owner Ernie Peterson said he will rebuild “somewhere, sometime.” He has been owner since 1984.
The company sells USDA-certified organic chicken feed products, poultry rations, equipment, livestock vitamins and minerals, poultry pre-mixes and natural fertilizer.
