During Spray Paint Art, a four-day summer school class offered through the La Crosse School District, teens learned the techniques needed to create their designs on canvas using an aerosol can.
They worked on their designs behind Central High School, and they looked just like the spray-paint artists making news in certain art circles.
“I love it,” said Mykala Miller, 14, who will be a freshman this fall at Central. “It’s fun to try new things and see what you can do with the things you have.”
Miller used several bright colors of spray paint, wood and parts of cut-up cups to create a city skyline that descends into a galaxy full of planets. She worked on the project with Amanda Bjorkman, 16, and Ashleigh Bye, 14.
“It was different to do and harder because you have to use different colors to make different textures,” Miller said after using white spray paint to add the look of stars.
There are many factors that contribute to creating art using spray paint and an artist has to learn to adapt quickly, said Joey Yoshizumi, 15, who will be a sophomore this fall at Central.
Working outdoors, Yoshizumi said the temperature and wind can play a role in how a project comes together.
“It can make it really hard,” he said.
But after taking a few classes in the medium, Yoshizumi and Ben Haller, 15, were able to pull together the planets and pyramid on their canvas.
“I like all the things you can do with spray paint,” Yoshizumi said. “I like how you can get it to blend.”
The final products will be on display July 26 and 27 during the 50th annual Art Fair on the Green on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus lawns.
