Onalaska soldier dies in Afghanistan

.
A 25-year-old soldier from Onalaska, Wis., has been killed in Afghanistan, the U.S. Army reported Monday.

First Lt. Nick A. Dewhirst died Sunday of injuries received when his convoy came under small arms and grenade fire in the Khost Province, according to an Army announcement.
Dewhirst was deployed to Afghanistan this spring with the 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, Ky.

He is the seventh service member from Wisconsin to die in Afghanistan; 89 have died in Iraq.

Dewhirst is survived by parents Randy and Susan Dewhirst of Onalaska. A family friend said Monday they had no comment.

An Eagle Scout, Dewhirst was a 2001 graduate of Onalaska High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society.

“He was an excellent leader,” said Jill Lyche Kulig, who was on the Onalaska student council with Dewhirst. “He cared about everyone.”

Tracy Miller, a childhood friend and neighbor, said Dewhirst liked being outdoors and was a good-natured boy.

“He was always fun to be around,” she said. “He always had a smile on his face.”

After a year at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., Dewhirst received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned in 2006. His military awards included the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The Army will hold a memorial service in Afghanistan.

Dewhirst is the first local service member to die in the Mideast since Senior Airman Adam Servais of Onalaska was killed Aug. 19, 2006, in Afghanistan.

" I agree with everyone on this site that says using this tragedy to speak of politics and the views is disrespectful. Some of the comments are made in reply to things others have said that disrespect. Unfortunately, the comments are erased periodically from the site. My prayers and sympathy go out to his family. I know how hard it is to have a service member in battle. My husband will be leaving in less than 90 days to go back to Iraq. I respect all the men and women who are serving our country and will forever be in their debt. God bless them all and bring them home safe. "

" Mr. and Mrs Dewhirst, you should be very, very proud of the son you raised. He was one of the best America has. My heart breaks for your sacrifice, and may God give you comfort. "

" It's hard to write about the pain a parent feels just reading this about your son. I hope you don't take much from the cruelty some readers express here. What a fine looking young man and successful too. You must have provided well for him physically and spiritually. His passing doesn't go unfelt by any mother of a son. I hope you find strength and a bit of peace knowing he was significant in his career and will be truly missed by many people we in the coulee region will never know. "

" God Bless Nick and his family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss. I'm ashamed to be posting on here with some of the vile and heartless comments that have been posted. Whether or not you believe in war, another life has been lost and we should give the family of the fallen the respect and support that they deserve. Shame on so many of you. To others that have given their support and prayers...I commend you. "

" God Bless Nick, his family, friends, and comrades in the US military. Anyone who isn't an extremist wackjob is proud of you. Shame on you who use this site to promote political agendas. You are worse than any candidate/party could ever be. I would encourage readers to ignore these incompetent remarks; without an audience, they will lose interest in tainting what should be supportive and sympathetic commentary. "

" First and foremost: Thank you to this young man's family for raising a courageous, unselfish, and dedicated child, and God Bless you in your loss.
Second, and sadly, NWO, find a different forum to proliferate your political interest. You have every right to make your statements, but in the interest of decency and respect, find another time and place. "

" Someone once said something along the lines of "We shouldn't mourn that such men as Nick Dewhirst died. Rather we should rejoice that such men lived."

Nick is an example of the best America has. Someone who could have continued his education in the private sector and made lots of money, but chose to serve his country and protect our right to live free and prosper. America is lucky to still produce such selfless people.

The other end of the spectrum are people like the first poster, NWO. If you want a country run by that type of person, vote Obama in November. "

" My thoughts and prayers are with Nick's family and friends. He was a very good guy, soft spoken, good hearted and always there to lend a hand. This is now the second person to be taken from my class of 2001 because of the war in Iraq. So very sad. "

" My heart goes out to his family. War is NOT THE ANSWER. Experts say we do not need more troops - we need more smarts and more diplomacy. What a tragedy. "If you add more troops in Afghanistan, you'll probably just lead to more [Taliban] recruitment." http://www.nydailynews.com/news/us_world/2008/07/19/2008-07-19_afghanistan_experts_say_john_mccain_and_.html "

" How do you think the mother and father of this fallen hero would feel if they read some of these posts. My gosh, I hope the family friend disables the computer, if they have one in the house. I know they may not have the strength to read about their son today, but in a few weeks they may. I hope the Trib "updates" this page and this blog is erased. "

" Anyone who made political comments on this page dishonors this man's death. You are a pathetic, despicable lot. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. God may rest your souls on judgement day. May he rest in peace. My sympathies to his family. "

" My condolences to the Dewhirst family on the loss of their son. First Lt. Dewhirst chose the military as his career and so it was a job that he loved and in which he believed. Ours is a volunteer armed forces and so our troops do not get to choose where they will go or which orders they will obey, but they did choose to enlist.

I have a godson in the Army whose first deployment last week was to the part of Afghanistan where the 9 troops died the other week. I warned him before he enlisted that this was a distinct possibility, but he went ahead. I fear for him, but I am actually more worried that he will lose his soul than lose his life. War is hell and not a jingoistic John Wayne movie. People die. "

" How sad this turns into a political debate. Sounds like he had to be a great person. Eagle Scout, West Point and all certainly those bringing politics here need to get a life. God bless his family and with that comment don't start bashing religion. "

" Once again this comment board is being abused. As a childhood friend and brother in arms with Nick, it weighs heavy on my heart to read 99% of these comments. Unless you wish to post words of support and sympathy for the Dewhirst family, please don't write anything at all. You do not deserve to use this tragedy as limelight to your political or spiritual views.

To all of the friends and family of Nick, my deepest sympathies. He will always live in our hearts and in our memories. "

Dewhirst's, service to our Great Nation and greatly appreciate Him for my freedom. 1st Lt. Nick A. Dewhirst, You are a true American Hero and will not be forgotten. " Deepest sympathy to the family of First Lt. Dewhirst. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I wish I could have know your son, he seems like such a fine young man.

P.S. To other commenters, I learned of this last night on Daily Kos, a liberal blog that has a nightly diary honoring those who died while serving our country. The rule there is to keep all political statements out of comments to that story and to only show our sorrow, love and respect. I suggest you all follow that lead. "

" I couldn't agree more ryeguy...a life was lost to a war (agreed with or not) at a young age and his family is greiving over a huge loss. Nick was amazing person and should be remembered for who he is and the things he fought for, not some political feelings when you don't have a clue who he was or what his family is feeling right now. Please be respectful. "

" My sympathies to his family. It sounds like we all would have been better for knowing him. My humble opinion, as one who has been opposed to the Irag invasion from the start but who supports our efforts in Afghanistan, is that it is tacky to use the report of the death of a soldier as a forum for politics. Save that for the stories on Bush and his cronies or reports on the war itself. Let friends and family grieve this fallen hero. "

kbg23 wrote on Jul 22, 2008 6:41 AM:

" Pretty much everyone on this blog makes me sick. You are all sitting here with the freedom to express whatever opinions you want BECAUSE of people like this young man. He just lost his life and a family just lost their son. I hardly think this is the time or the place to be stating your political opinions. My thoughts and prayers are with this family. "

" NWO,

You are correct in saying you are entitled to your opinion and you are able to comment as you see fit. Well the same goes for everyone else on this site-we may comment as we see fit. However, I find it very difficult to understand how you feel such sympathy for the 19 year old who stopped feeding her baby and didn't get medical help but you wouldn't support your own son if he was in the military. What kind of parent are you? "

" If I leave a comment, it is my intention to never respond regarding comments I made. No one should have to. In this case I still happen to be online before I go to bed and see a reason why I should...I did not say vote for Obama to end this stuff, I said vote for anything other than a Republican. Second, these 'blogs' are for expressing opinion and those opinions are protected. No one's name or reputation has been 'bad-mouthed.' People will diagree with one another 'til the end of time. If I didn't post anything here, Mom Of 1 and the like would have their way. We should not let that happen. "
