Olson's seat to remain vacant

.
The La Crosse Common Council District 2 seat will remain vacant until April's regular election, council president Bill Harnden said this afternoon.

Harnden had been on the fence about filling the post Monday after hearing word of Jon Olson's resignation.
Olson cited personal reasons in his decision to step down from the far North Side district he represented for almost 61/2 years.

Harnden said he consulted two other North Side aldermen before ultimately deciding not to seek an appointment.

The seat couldn't be filled until October at the earliest, while candidates in the April elected can begin circulating Dec. 1, he said.

Harnden also said North Side council members Andrea Richmond from District 1 and George Italiano from District 3 have agreed to take any calls for the district.

He hadn't yet spoken with District 4 council member Jai Johnson.

Olson was the second council member to resign this year. Joe Ledvina, former council president, bowed out in April, and only recently was replaced by South Sider Lorraine Rose Decker.

" What is the difference between Ms. Lorraine Rose Decker, George Italiano, and Mr. Craig Nestor? One of them is not a guaranteed yes vote. Not fair you say, let's tabulate the upcoming votes? Nothing changes, it gives them time to plant a 'ringer' for spring 2009. No surprise here! "

" This is News? Craig Nestor has made no secret that he would fill that position. This article also draws alarmingly close to inferring that two Northside Alderman believe this position should remain vacant and the taxpayers in this District remain unrepresented. That is not true, far from it! Apparently through Mitch on his PM WIZM Talk Show Mr. Record thought that those residents in District 2 should not pay their City taxes over this next 'year'. I can guarantee you that Mr. Nestor is not another Lorainne Rose Decker, or George Italiano for that matter. "

" maybe this should be the start of reducing and reorganizing the districts. "
