Motor fuel taxes are needed to rebuild our nation’s roads

.
We haven’t heard much lately about a “gas tax holiday.” That’s probably because reality has set in — even at the national political level.

As gas taxes were rising, Republican presidential candidate John McCain and Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton were calling for a federal “gas tax holiday,” to give consumers a break by temporary repealing federal motor fuel taxes.
It was a bad idea for a couple of reasons. No. 1 is the fact that we depend on the motor fuel tax to pay for much-needed road and bridge repairs. No. 2 is that the temporary repeal of the tax wouldn’t have saved consumers much money.

In addition, there is another reason why it would be difficult to forgo the revenue raised by the gas tax — jobs. If the tax reduction plan would have gone into effect, the federal government would have had $9 billion less to spend.

And people who ordinarily work on road projects could have been laid off for lack of funds.

U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastruc-ture committee, teamed up with Rep. Peter DeFazio, chairman of the highway subcommittee, to produce an estimate of job loss without that $9 billion.

On the low end, it included $30 million less and 1,000 jobs lost in Vermont. At the high end, it would have meant $664 million less and 23,000 lost highway jobs in California.

Besides the job loss, we just need to spend the time and money improving our highway infrastructure. In downtown Milwaukee, the massive Marquette Interchange, the place where Interstates 94 and 43 come together, is under-going an extensive reconstruction.

When that project is done, Interstate 94 needs to be reconstructed between Milwaukee and the Illinois state line. That’s because those freeways are 30 years old and in need of replacement. Those projects will costs billions of dollars.

There are similar reconstruction needs throughout the country. They will cost big money. Instead of suspending the gas tax, the more realistic answer might be a tax increase to help pay for the repairs and the reconstruction. That’s what Congress is considering for the federal motor fuel tax. And that makes sense because the tax directly affects those who use the highways.

It’s also interesting that the gas tax story ran on the Sunday Tribune’s front page — right next to an update about the West Avenue reconstruction project — which affects a major La Crosse South Side artery.

To keep our roads and bridges safe and functional, we need a little realism — not a pie-in-the-sky promise for a “tax holiday.”

" How about finding out how much of the over the road tax from trucking companies, which pay millions for maintainance, gas tax and all the other taxes that are supposed to be used for the infrastructure and instead go into the General Fund, where it is divied out for other things! Designated monies should be used for that only, when are we going to protest our legislators to get the pork out of bills written for specific things, and how stupid are we for letting this go on. Lets CUT the WELFARE, which is where it is going and get our country back in shape. ENOUGH TAX! "

" Dear Editorial Board:

Please take notice that not one PRO position has come on here defending a higher gas tax.

Could it be that their position was WRONG? "

" Not surprising that Democrats think that they can tax their way to success. To politicains it's as easy as a stroke of the pen.

If you look at taxes recieved from oil verses the profits made by oil, you see that the government has taken in more with a stroke of the pen then oil companies who actually do the work. (http://www.taxfoundation.org/publications/show/1139.html)

What is also intresting to know is that the largest American Oil company (Exxon-Mobil) is ranked #14 against all other oil 'companies'. The reason I put 'companies' in parenthesis is that the big 'companies' are actually state run organizations (Iran, Veneuzuela, China, etc.).

The real roadblock to energy independence is government." "

" tax-me-more, your estimate of 33% is on the low side. when you factor in the 23% 'hidden' tax on EVERYTHING your buy. the total tax burden is over 50%. that hidden tax is the trickle down of the taxes businesses pay. a tax to a company is just a cost of doing business, and they add it onto cost the finished product, just as they would for any other expense, ie raw materials, labor etc.. "

" what the heck, throw some more taxes on oil. first the oil companies PAY money to the government for leases of government land. then if oil is found the oil companies PAY the government royalties on that oil. then when they sell that oil the companies PAY the government income taxes on the profit. then the refiners refine it into gas, and they PAY income taxes to the government. the stations selling the gas PAY taxes to the government, and finally we the consumer PAY excise taxes to the government. sounds like government has worked out a sweet deal, they do nothing, but reap the rewards. all the while telling the average Joe how they 'feel' his pain because of high gas prices. " The editorial board is 100% correct; we need a little realism.

To that end, here is what they didn't tell you and what they didn't address. Here is what NO POLITICIAN advocating higher taxes, has ever addressed.

Government already takes 1/3 (33%) of what we earn.

How much do you people (tribune editorial board, democrats, any one touting tax increases) believe the government is entitled to, HOW MUCH?

Failure to address this question mutes any comments/arguments. "
