Update: Truck pulled from Mississippi

A pickup truck was pulled from the west channel of the Mississippi River at the Gopher State Sportman's Landing this morning after it sank when the brakes failed and tires slid on algae-covered concrete as the driver was putting his boat in the water, said La Crescent (Minn.) Police Chief Todd Nelson.

The truck entered the water about 9:30 a.m. and the driver crawled out his window, Nelson said.

The truck floated about 30 yards downstream. It was removed from the water by the La Crosse Area Underwater Rescue and Recovery Unit and a Holmen (Wis.) towing company using cables.
