Franciscan Skemp ER center to open Aug. 6

.
Franciscan Skemp Healthcare announced today that it will open the newly integrated Emergency and Urgent Care Center on Aug. 6.

The 15,000-square-foot facility is located in the north end of the Center for Advanced Medicine and Surgery, on Market Street and West Avenue. The new center will be open 24 hours a day, including urgent care services.
"This is a model truly designed with the patient's needs in mind," said Dr. Robert E. Nesse, president and CEO of Franciscan Skemp. “In the past, patients were often put in the position of trying to 'guess' how serious their condition was. Now, they need only come to one place and a trained medical professional will triage them and ensure they receive care that is appropriate for the complexity of their need."

Patients requiring less acute services will use a model designed to flow the patient in and out in a timely way, he said. Patients needing emergency services will receive the appropriate level of care and have access to the most current technologies, Nesse added.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Wisconsin and Southeastern Minnesota helped create a waiting area featuring original art. A children's area is scaled just for younger visitors and is supplied with books and activities.

Almost half of the $9 million project was funded through a communitywide fund drive. The campaign's largest gift was a commitment of $1 million from the D.B. and Marjorie Reinhart Family Foundation. Ten other leadership gifts, ranging from $100,000 to $500,000, were received in the campaign. Leadership commitments came from Festival Foods, Kwik Trip, Don and Roxanne Weber, Jeb and Pam Griffith, the Russell and Vera Smith Foundation, the Hansen Family Foundation and several other major benefactors.

" I'm happy for FSH that they now have their Urgent/Care and Emergency in the same location. But the location makes no sense to me. There had to have been a better location for the entryway to this with ambulances, etc.. And "where" are people supposed to park? Oh, and to "happymom"-please take your opinion on the right to healthcare and go back to your "happyplace". "

" If a patient needs anything beyond a hangnail removed, they're still gonna end up taking the drive to Rochester. And to lax8751, health insurance is an easily attainable product if you avail yourself of it. Health care is not a right, as many have been brainwashed to believe. "

" je...if you go to GL Onalaska why not try the FSH Onalaska facility? It is great... "

" gjmom- I don't have insurance. I'm glad you have the luxury of routine medical care. "

" Darwin, I think I can help clarify the statement you were wondering about. The ER and Urgent Care were in 2 separate locations. Many times people are unsure if their illness is "severe enough" to warrant visit to ER or if they should go to Urgent Care. The new center will have both ER and Urgent Care in the same location and triage nurse will decide which department sees you. Hope this helps. "

" To Lax8751: Was this really needed? Can we accomodate 2 ER's? I am not sure who you are insured by but my insurance company mandates where I am seen for my medical care. I want where ever I go to be state of the art. As far as inadequate "walk-in" service, this should eliminate "flow" problems that occur in some clinics. Also, please remember Urgent Care and ER's are not your doctor's office. They are dictated by TRIAGE and ACCUITY not first come-first served. Throat cultures will wait, chest pain will not. If you were having the heart attack would you want to wait for Joe Blow's throat culture? "

" This was very-much needed. I agree, it was easier to go to Gundersen for "walk-in" issues. "

" What an odd statement: "This is a model truly designed with the patient's needs in mind."
As opposed to...?
It is a remarkable day when medical centers are designed with patients' needs in mind. "

" I have to ask if this is really necessary. Can the La Crosse market accommodate two ERs? I wonder if this $ would have been better spent on providing health care to the uninsured. Noting the extensive "advertising" of both GL & Skemp, it seems they could have used some of their public relations budget for the construction costs. "

" I hope Franciscan Skemp has indeed updated their very inadequate urgent care/"walk in" clinic. My primary physician is at Franciscan-Skemp. I go there for all of my routine medical care. My husband's primary doctor is at Gundersen-Lutheran. If I need "walk-in" clinic treatment, I go to Gundersen-Lutheran in Onalaska. I don't have an entire day to spend at Franciscan-Skemp for a throat culture or routine stitches. "
