Published - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 We Say: Jared Heintz, assistant sports editor, on Brett Favre. Brett Favre’s desire to return to football has to be about the money. He apparently can’t afford his own cell phone to broker possible trades out of Green Bay. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Bob McGinn reported that a source said Favre used a Packers-issued cell phone after his retirement, and upon checking the phone records the team found “repeated calls to (Minnesota Vikings) coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.” When the Packers filed tampering charges against the Vikings last week, it seemed hard to believe Green Bay could prove “inappropriate dialogue” between Favre and Bevell considering the two are good friends. But since Favre used the Packers’ call plan to chat with Childress, it seems more likely the Vikings could lose draft picks and any chance they had at trading for the Packers legend. Green Bay was already in a no-win situation with Favre. It’s nice to see Brett making this saga as difficult as possible for other teams as well.
