Got that ’40s look? Here’s the movie part for you

.
We couldn’t get Johnny Depp to shoot a movie here, but we’ve got Kate Connor.

Connor, who wrote and will direct and produce the movie “Fort McCoy” for her Marzipan Entertainment company, is looking for actors so she can start filming in the area Aug. 19.
Connor was in town Thursday to check out shooting locations and to set up a cattle call for locals who would like to be in the film.

That audition is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the La Crosse Community Theatre Annex, 508 Main St. Call (608) 784-9292 to register so Artistic-Managing Director Allen Ebert and his crew know how many people will be showing up.

Men, being in the movie will call for a greater sacrifice on your part because this is a World War II era movie about Connor’s parents who lived in a cabin near Fort McCoy. So — you guessed it — you’ve got to be willing to cut your hair. How short? Find a picture of Grandpa from World War II, and that will give you a clue.

Ebert said those who audition should show up wearing ’40s style clothing or as close as they can get to it so Connor and the producers can get an idea of how the era looks on the actors.

The movie is based on the story of Connor’s mom, Micki Stirn Connor, who grew up near McCoy. The cast will involve about 30 people, including three children. One of those children will be playing the part of a 12-year-old German POW child. “The dream would be to find a boy who speaks German.”

Connor was scouting locations Thursday with La Crosse Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Dave Clements. They need something that looks like a military barracks, a chapel and a little brown cabin in the woods, built and still in the style of the mid-1940s (one near a stream would be ideal).

If you think you’ve got a site to match that description, you can reach Clements at clements@explorelacrosse.com.

“We’re pretty excited,” Clements said. “(The movie) just fell into our laps.”

" She doesn't seem to be all that energenic or experienced. One call to Ft McCoy would result in the use of a barracks, maybe even one of the barracks that have been restored to it's WWII state. "

" Odd. So the audition is based on how well you scavenge for clothing? A normal film audition is about acting ability and presence. Give ANYONE a haircut and some authentic looking 40's clothes and they'll look right for the part. It's too bad this "director" doesn't know that. Also, in the movies it's very easy to cut from a shot of walking away from a building to another shot of walking to a stream to give the illusion that they are close to one another. This sounds like a woman with a video camera and a dream, but no experience. "
