We must protect Social Security

Once again we are hearing about problems with Social Security. Many in our federal government, as well as some citizens who are able to provide their own fortunes, seem to have forgotten the original purpose of Social Security: providing income for those unable to provide for the time when they will be unable to work.

In a sense, Social Security money is a loan to the national general fund. It was never set aside. This means retirees have helped pay for roads, bridges, etc., for many years. It also means the money was “borrowed” for general use. It also means it can be claimed on its due date.

Maybe we need to emulate countries that are able to provide necessary social services as well as a sensible mass transit system.
