La Farge, which you printed July 14. Mr Ingersoll calls
for the impeachment of President Bush.
We all have laws that we are expected to obey, and if we don’t, there is penalty. Even the president and vice president must obey those laws because in our form of government, no one is above the law. Our Constitution provides for just one method of making certain that the president obeys the law, and that is impeachment.
For more than seven years, President Bush has signed laws that were passed by Congress. In more than 1,000 cases, after he has signed the bill and made it law for all of us he has written separate statements in effect saying he will only enforce those laws when he feels like doing so. He doesn’t have that right of choice.
When a law is a law, it must be enforced for everyone, including the president. Unfortunately, the Demo-cratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, announced early in her term as speaker that impeachment would not be on the table. In my opinion, the speaker has also violated her oath to enforce the terms of the Constitution and should also be subject to impeachment. When Speaker Pelosi announced that impeachment would not be enforced, she gave President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney implied consent to shred the Constitution as they wished.
The sooner Speaker Pelosi and Congressman Ron Kind get back to observing their oath of office, the better our nation will be.
