Packers: Favre to file for reinstatement, report to camp

.
GREEN BAY — Brett Favre has indeed called the Green Bay Packers' so-called bluff.

The retired quarterback has told Packers general manager Ted Thompson that he plans on reporting to training camp, NFL.com and the NFL Network reported this morning.
Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre talks during a news conference before the Green Bay Packers' Hall of Fame induction banquet Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. An NFL source confirmed the report, adding that the Packers are expecting Favre to submit a letter seeking reinstatment to the NFL as early as today.

Players are to begin moving into their St. Norbert College dorms in De Pere on Saturday and have to report to the camp-opening team meeting at 7 a.m. Sunday. The first practice is Monday morning.

The move figures to accelerate the Packers' efforts to trade the 17-year veteran, who retired March 6 and asked the Packers for his outright release in a letter July 11.

Yahoo! Sports reported earlier today that a deal involving Favre may be close after the sides talked about possible destinations earlier this week.

In his interview with Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren, Favre said he wouldn't report to camp just to cause problems for the Packers, who have anointed Aaron Rodgers their new starter at quarterback.

Asked by Van Susteren if being a backup — as the Packers have suggested — is unacceptable to him, Favre replied, "I think so. I've had a lot of people (say), `Go back and hold them to it.' I don't see it that way. It's tempting just to — because everyone's (saying), `Call their bluff' or whatever. I think it's going to be a circus in itself already, whether I go there (or not). ... I don't want to make it any worse than it is.

"Do I play somewhere else? (That) remains to be seen. But I don't want to go back there just to stick it to 'em."

There are no, and none that I have ever heard of, certainly since Ive been back and I think I would know any cell phones that any of our players have that are issued by the Packers, "

" I'm curious, do all you Packer fans who think Brett would be a traitor if he plays for another team consider Vince Lombardi a traitor? He left Green Bay to coach the Washington Redskins. Most Packer fans probably don't even know that. "

" Eddie...you're right, I guess. I'm just hoping Brett will do the right thing-not let Packer fans down--by STAYING retired. I think he hit his head one too many times, this is just not characteristic of him. The thought of him in another jersey turns my stomach. "

" He sounds like a big cry baby to me. He's old. He needs to stay home and spend time with his wife and family, he's had his "years in the sun." I personally would think it would be very funny for him to sign with the Vikes only to fall flat on his face!! Go home Brett....let the Pack rebuild and win without you. Believe it or not, it CAN be done! "

" formerlax, Brett Favre did indeed let Packer fans down. He did so when he retired, not once but TWICE, and then changed his mind again. He let his whole team down. He let the Packer front office down. No player, no matter how great he is, has the right to keep changing his mind about retirement and then expect the team to give him anything he wants. Favre-worshippers need to accept the fact that the TEAM comes before any one player. "

" People hes GONE! Management will not backdown this time and if he shows up he will be sitting on the sidelines most likely which will force a trade that would allow him to play. I would rather see him on another team playing then sitting on the sidelines only to be called upon in an emergency situation looking like an idiot. Why cant the position be shared? Mike Marshall did it for the Twins(yeah I know baseball) for years and pitched alot of no hitters in the late 70,s and early 80's and won many games for the twins after retirement. This whole thing is stupid and makes the Packers management look more stupid than Favre. My moneys on HES GONE and they will face him on the field in another set of colors. "

" Nova: You must have missed the report where a league source confirmed that Favre was never issued a Packers cell phone. They don't even have team issued cell phones. Where do you get your news?! "

doctor9 wrote on Jul 25, 2008 4:19 PM:

" Brett saying he was forced out is foolishness. Brett had another year in his contract, and if he doesn't retire, he should honor his promise to play. He promised to play through the 2008/2009 season when you signed that contract. Plus, Brett's already getting that money, whether he plays or not, so he's not after more money. Actually, retiring from football would be the money making decision, since he'd have more time for commercials, writing his autobiography, and personal appearances. If he does show up at camp, let him compete for his spot. Hope he's been going to the gym during all of this foolishness, though. "

sillyme wrote on Jul 25, 2008 3:52 PM:

" I believe Bret just got sick of the MEDIA asking about retirement. He must have felt like the MEDIA and fans must want him to retire so what the heck I'll do it! PLEASE come back Bret, you are our only hope. Rodgers will be hurt before long, if he even makes it through training camp injury free. Many retired persons wish they would have stayed working longer but did what they thought was expected of them to do Rodgers will never be the respected person that Favre is!! "

GOD_HIMSELF wrote on Jul 25, 2008 3:49 PM:

" felching pro, packer fans are being laughed at? why? brett was the greatest and he gave the pack the best sixteen years most people could ever think of, and a superbowl win (that's one more than your queens have). nothing is gonna change that. the packers have moved on and it's the right thing to do. as far as him wanting to play for your queens, i'm sure when he realized the packers had moved on, he figured he's go somewhere that there wouldn't really be any expectations.
this is actually the best thing that could have happened. the packers were planning on the future without brett regardless, now they're gonna get some draft picks for him. certainly a better move that getting rid of moss when he was in his prime, no? "

Mr. Bigglesworth wrote on Jul 25, 2008 3:40 PM:

" First of all, if I was tettering about retiring, while working for a successful business, I would expect that they find a replacement before I go, not wait until I quit/retire. Not buying he was 'forced' off of the team. Second, "Brett gives us the best chance to win", maybe on an ordinary sunday with little on the line. It's been 12 years since we won a SuperBowl. How has he done in the majority of big games we have been in? Rodgers will be fine, everyone forget Ted was GM of the year last year? "

quay wrote on Jul 25, 2008 3:23 PM:

" I can't believe this. He must have A.D.D. or something.
If he does play for the pack the only way he can unite the team and the fans (I believe) would announce it's his last year and have a big year long love fest. Still, a pretty disfunctional huddle. "

"A league source confirmed previous media reports that Favre was using a Packers-issued cell phone in his alleged communications with Bevell and Childress." No one's saying he can't change his mind. He just needs to understand that in the real( adult) world there are consequences to your actions. Life goes on! "

Now look at your boy. He wants to play for Minnesota. I think this is just hilarious. Makes Minnesota's love boat thing seem pretty funny now huh. Brett is the best Packer ever and he loves us all very much. He is a true packer. Well, doesn't look to be that way anymore huh. I love it. Good luck Rodgers!! At least you won't have to worry about the sun since you will be in Favre's shadow your whole career at Green bay. Watch your beloved Packer fans. they will turn on you just like they did Favre. "

" RE: hst7950

Thank you. This situation is crazy because everyone on this blog has acted like they have never made a decision and then changed their mind? How many of you have moved to new towns? Started new jobs? Went back to school? Come on people! He is human, so he decided he wanted to play again. Yeah, maybe he didn't go about it in the right way but I would hardly call changing your mind being a crybaby. People do it every day - they just don't have the media inflating it. "

Hey Nova - make sure YOU read the news before you make a post on this article. The Packers released a statement saying they don't issue players cell phones and that was all thought up by the media, like 85% of the rest of this Favre story. "

In regard to MY thoughts on this: I hope Favre wins the Super Bowl...wherever he winds up playing. I hope that it IS with the Packers! Do they rest their heads on their green and gold pillows each night, wondering if the tooth fairy will deliver their golden boy back to Green Bay? You may love Brett like he's the boy next door, but not to worry - he loves Brett too.
From day 1 this has been about padding his retirement fund. Why not just stand up and admit it like the rest of them? That would at least give you some dignity, Brett. "

Yes, Brett is an awesome quarterback but he's the one who chose to retire (even after several years of keeping us all guessing whether or not he was really going to do it or not). Well, he made his bed, he has to sleep in it. Quit being such a cry baby, Brett. You're only making everyone lose respect for you. As far as the Packer organization, good for you! As far as whatever team gets Brett, better get the kleenex ready! "

Go to training camp, earn your spot, stop whining, and we'll be rooting for you and the Pack come game day whether you're the starter or not. "

We want Rogers we want Rogers... arg! What ever team has a used Volvo and a Gatorade bottle to trade, Brett's gone! "
