I feel that this particular statement is insulting to veterans and not praise for Mr. McCain. Veterans, from inception of our republic, donned their uniforms and left home and hearth in the belief that they were defending their country from enemies, both foreign and domestic, as well as the defending the document upon which we base our nation, the Constitution.
U. S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas in 1959 said: “Undoubtedly, the right of suffrage is a fundamental matter in a free and democratic society. Especially since the right to exercise the franchise in free and unimpaired manner is preservative of other basic civil and political rights, any alleged infringement of the rights of citizens to vote must be carefully and meticulously scrutinized. Any unjustified discrimination in determining who may participate in political affairs or in the selection of public officials undermines the legitimacy of representative government ... ”
Vandalism is a brazen act of cowardice and a direct assault on free and open elections.
Our veterans laid down their lives to protect and preserve this basic right — a free and open election. There’s a time and place to “voice” your displeasure with one party or candidate and that’s Election Day at the polls.
