Conservation and alternative fuels can ease our oil addiction

.
Oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens created a stir recently when he suggested that we can’t “drill our way out” of our current energy crisis.

Pickens has suggested using wind energy to generate electrical power and using natural gas for truck transportation.
It’s an interesting proposal, but U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, is skeptical.

First, Kind says, don’t forget that Pickens has secured a lot of natural gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico. Putting his plan into effect would be a windfall for him.

Secondly, be careful about how much natural gas we divert from home heating into transportation. Heating costs are expected to increase substantially this winter. What will be the impact on prices if we’re using a lot of natural gas for transportation?

Even though Kind is skeptical about Pickens’ proposals, he argued in a meeting with the Tribune Editorial Board Monday that Pickens is absolutely correct about our inability to drill our way back to oil abundance.

The United States makes up 4 percent of the world’s population, Kind said, but uses 25 percent of the world’s oil. Meanwhile, the oil in the United States represents about 2 percent of the world’s known oil reserves.

And Kind didn’t even talk about how China and other emerging countries are beginning to develop oil addictions just like ours.

Increasing drilling might have a short-term impact on supply, but in the long run, we will need to conserve energy and to develop alternative forms of energy — including electric cars, hydrogen, more uses for natural gas, wind, solar and other forms.

“We ought not mislead the American people,” Kind said. “We need a comprehensive energy plan for the future.”

" blogger. heaven forbid someone make a 'profit', that's downright unAmerican. and oil barrons? you mean the Saudies, Chavez, Putin? those are the modern day 'oil barrons'. and why? because our own stupidity has let them dictate to us. i just can't understand the logic of making the whole Country suffer, when we do have massive reserves untapped in this Country. and as far as why we have no energy policy in this Country? ask any congressman or representive who has been, or is in office at any time over the last 40 years. don't wait for an answer though, they won't have any. "

" Politicians may "work" for us but oil companies dont - and THEY will be the ones drilling and making a profit. More to the point, how much allegiance do politicians owe the oil barons? Companies have millions of acres of public land available to drill on yet dont know if oil is there or not. WHY? The argument is drilling in areas now off limits but is oil there? We have no comprehensive national energy policy yet it is a national security issue. Why no policy, and why no debate about creating one? "

" we've been saying we need energy 'alternatives' for 40 years. where the heck are they? still 20 to 30 years off to become feasible? why not tap the oil we know we have now to tide us over til these 'alternatives' actually become feasible? oh, i forgot, this is an election year, and politicians want everyone to suffer so they can play the blame game to be elected or re-elected. someone needs to remind politicians they work for us, not the other way around.
