They stand outside the Hamilton Boys & Girls Club and yell “Lemonade, 50 cents” from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursdays in hopes that folks will stop by for a glass from their stand.
Truck drivers, neighbors and friends have left more than $150 for the Angelo Poppe family during the lemonade sales that have been held so far.
Angelo was a member of the Huber Boys & Girls Club, and members and staff from Hamilton opted to pull together to offer their assistance.
Hamilton site coordinator Mary Teclaw said there isn’t a shortage of kids who want to staff the lemonade stand.
“They are just a riot,” Teclaw said. “They really want to help.”
Three Huber Club members, who were friends of Angelo, came last week to assist the Hamilton youths.
“We came to sell lemonade for Angelo,” said Dianne Boehme, 9. “We want to support our friend’s family.”
Seven-year-old Austen Weglarek said Angelo liked to play football and baseball and ride his bike.
“We all played with him,” Rachael Faulkner, 10, said. “He hugged people and liked to play at the Boys & Girls Club.”
Hamilton Club members Shyann McClendon, 9, and Dejah Williams, 7, said working at the lemonade stand has been neat.
“It’s fun to meet new people and give them lemonade,” McClendon said. “It’s also nice to know we’re helping people.”
Members Robert and Kenedi Schmidt, both 6, have taken their role of attracting customers seriously and often can be heard yelling the loudest, Teclaw said.
“We have lemonade to sell,” Robert said. “It’s just fun.”
Teclaw said the Schmidt twins will be visiting with Boys & Girls Club of Greater La Crosse board members this week to talk about the stand.
And they’ll be serving lemonade.
